Related: About this forumI have gut wrenching news to share. Sweet Mittens the Kitten has crossed the Rainbow Bridge
I'm in shock. She wasn't outside at breakfast, this morning, but that's not totally unusual. I fed the rest and carried on. When I went out to start some yard work I saw something on my lawn, just off of the curb. My heart sank because the closer I got - yes, it was my baby.
I don't know if she was hit by a car or of some miscreant neighbor decided to send a message (I doubt the next door neighbor but maybe time will tell.)
Needless to say I burst into tears and then quickly found a shovel so I could dig a grave. She's buried by a rose bush, along side the garage. I put some roses in the ground with her and a marker will be made.
I tried to carry on with yard work but I can't stop crying. Maybe later. I don't know. What I do know is I don't think I can bear this pain for the 3rd time in less than a year.

(131 posts)So so sorry. Lost my beloved cat in May to lymphoma. We're still crying now and then.
We live in Scottsdale at the edge of raw desert. In our neighborhood, no one lets their cats out because we have so much wildlife in the area -- bobcats, coyotes, and a rare mountain lion. In the 12 years we've lived in the neighborhood we have NEVER seen a cat outside a home ... because it's just too dangerous for them and they would not last long.

(12,274 posts)I have buried so many fur friends that were struck by vehicles. I cant stand the thought of them feeding the buzzards. Others have died from disease. It is always gut wrenching. I worry about our ferals and Dearie the deer. That one has been visiting for over 3 years, showing off her fawns and insisting on a can of bird seed in her bowl.
Thank you for being such a good friend to the cats, rescues and ferals.

May her brothers console you.

(27,253 posts)Early on she'd let me give her scritches. And she always very softly meowed at me. Seeing her, first thing in the morning, always made me smile. I still can't fully accept she's gone.
The weird thing is, I've never seen her anywhere near the street. She wandered from my house to the neighbors, and around my back lot. And if she was hit by a car, it was a glancing blow. What actually happened to her is going to haunt me.

(7,419 posts)is difficult. You gave her love and respect and you took care of her. You had her and she had you and that is a beautiful bond. I am glad you gave her roses, she deserved them. Let the tears flow because one day the smiles will emerge for Mittens the Kitten.

(25,624 posts)The same happened to a feral cat I was feeding and providing shelter for several years. She hadn't been around for a week, which was unusual, sometimes she might be gone for a coupe of days, but a week was too long. About a week later, talking to a neighbor, they said there had been a dead black cat in the yard next door to them. It was my Spooky. The neighbor did not know I had been caring for her. It broke my heart then just as yours is broken now. We do get past it, but they never leave our hearts.

(36 posts)Something that's helped me when I'm mourning cats that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge--I ask my cats who have passed earlier to look out for the new arrival. And when I've adopted another cat I let them know that they have fairy godmothers/godfathers looking out for them and tell them about their quirks and how much I loved them.
This bit of magical thinking keeps us all connected.
This may not appeal to you at all, but I thought I'd share.

(27,253 posts)I know caring for ferals is always a risky thing, which is why I've rescued 8 kittens out of that population and made sure they have loving homes. I just wish I could have saved Mittens and her brother Spooky Jr.

(9,870 posts)Your love for all those furry family members is always obvious and a pleasure to read about as a break from all the hate and brutality. No prayers, certainly not effective it seems, but I certainly am thinking and sending healing vibes in hopes you feel it from all of us. My late wife found strength just knowing people had her on their mind as she battled cancer. I am on number 5 and 6 Labs over my adult life, and well know the love you get from them and the heartache when they leave us. That little baby was blessed to receive your love and feel it while she could. Wishing you strength and healing.
