Long, long agofive years, to be preciseJeff Owens accepted that his calls to the vet would tax his fortitude. When the person on the other end asks his name, Owens, a test scorer in Albuquerque, says, Jeff. When they ask for his cats name, he has to tell them, Baby Jeff. The black exotic shorthair, a wheezy female with a squashed face and soulful orange eyes, is named for Owens, says his partner, Brittany Means, whose tweet about Jeff and Baby Jeff went viral this past spring. The whole thing started as a joke several years ago, when Means started calling every newcomer to their homethe car, the couchBaby Jeff. Faced with blank adoption paperwork in 2017, the couple realized that only one name would do.
Baby Jeff is a weird (albeit very good!) name, but its not as weird as it would have been a century or two ago. In the U.S., and much of the rest of the Western world, were officially living in an era of bequeathing unto our pets some rather human names. Its one of the most prominent reminders that these animals have become members of the family, says Shelly Volsche, an anthropologist at Boise State University, to the point where theyre ascribed agency and personhood. The animals in our homes commonly receive so many of the acts of love people shower on the tiny humans under their care; pets share our beds, our diets, our clothes. So why not our names, too?

(9,698 posts)We got him from a family in York, PA, and on the way home we passed the exit on Rt 30 to my grandparents house (he died in 1984 and Grandma in 1992). Seemed like an omen, so Charlie he is.

(24,430 posts)their physical appearance, but do sound like human names. Long-haired, solid black cat was Merlin. Ginger striped cat was Leo, for lion. Current cat is Ember because her black and gray stripes with random red streaks reminded me of the embers of a fire. Suits her personality, too, because she can be cozy and warm or can flare up with cattitude. I don't remember how we came up with Alex for one of our cats, but it fit his personality, too. He looked like a tabby but was half Siamese and a bit of a "Smart Alec."
