Actions to Help End Horse Slaughter on Voices for Horses Day
November 16th is Voices for Horses Day and we need your help in taking critical actions for American horses being killed for meat. This cruelty must end now!
Every year, over 30,000 horses are sent by the US to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. They are crammed onto transport trucks without food or water for over 24 hours. They arrive at the slaughterhouse scared and covered in injuries caused by stressed animals biting and kicking to show dominance. Once inside, they are often slaughtered while conscious due to ineffective stunning.
The majority of Americans disagree with the consumption of meat from horses. Yet there is currently no permanent federal ban on the exportation or slaughter of American horses.

(24,145 posts)In getting the last horse slaughterhouses closed in the U.S. The horror just went in a different direction, with horses being shipped north and south over the borders.
There are laws in place for humane transportation.

But it does nothing to address the terror and cruelty inflicted on these intelligent animals. I know plenty of people say the same is true for the shipment of other animals. The difference is that horses are not considered livestock, raised for meat. They are companion animals. Many of them have been attained by theft, sold for peanuts after an unsuccessful track career, or BLM animals that had the misfortune to be, "adopted," by the wrong people. Most are just discarded, sold to the highest bidder at auction. People that think animals are disposable. The meat is often shipped to Europe, where it is still commonly eaten.
We are aghast at the dog meat trade in parts of Asia. Horses deserve our same empathy, and for the same reasons.

(28,246 posts)I often wonder how people can turn their backs on sentient animals, much less the intelligence ones we interact with.
I remember: most religions only elevate humans.

They viewed horses same as cattle. Just meat. They shipped the meat home to Belgium.
And yes, when they were finally shutdown they were prepared and simply moved operations to just south of the border in Mexico and continue on.
They were operating just east of Dallas. Camouflaged it well, had horses delivered in the dead of night and used migrant workers.
