https://imgur.com/gallery/hUgzh4uYesterday, I had an appointment to take my second feral cat to the vet to get neutered, shots and have a wound taken care of side note: my vet is 45 miles away (I live in a very rural area).
On my way home from dropping Brother Bester (brother to feral number one - Chester Bester), I see two dogs running in the middle of the highway - am about 25+ miles from home) there is a house near, so I hope they belong there although I see them in my review mirror watching my car).
Next trip to pick up Brother is around 3:30 .. on the way home about a mile from my house I see about 3 small dogs on the side of the road they cross the road behind me. I flash my lights at an oncoming truck to slow him down. Then, just before I turn on my gravel road, I see one of the dogs from the morning all alone.
All I can think is how awful it is that people are dumping their dogs in the country on the highway.
I tell this story to my hubby (he has gone to our sons house 120 miles away and will return tomorrow).
So this morning, my neighbor calls me and asks if I am missing a dog I say no, both of my dogs are right here and he describes the dog I saw twice yesterday he tells me it is on my gravel road .
I call my hubby and ask him to talk me off the roof . he wants the details I tell him about the dog he asked me what I am going to name it
So, I get a soft leash, a bowl of water and a bowl of food and go find the dog
I drive the gravel no dog so I head north about one half mile there is the dog I pull over and open the door the dog jumps into my car and my arms
She was so hungry and thirsty
She and all my critters have had a lovely day
and no one will ever throw her away again.

(24,755 posts)She's a poodle terrier mix of some kind. She was so skinny you could see her ribs. Half of her hair was gone and she was covered with flea bites. She was a stray found on the streets of Orange County, CA, about 600 miles away. She was in a kill shelter with a date and this rescue group drove down there and got her. We made a nice contribution to the organization and brought her home.
She was so sickly looking but they assured us a vet said she was going to be okay. I looked her in the eyes and told her I promise she will never be hungry again.
Fast forward to today, she's probably about 15 years old. She been the most wonderful dog and she's my girl and sleeps in bed with me. She's going blind, and is deaf. Oh, yeah, and she's a little over-weight.
Chloe looks beautiful and I'm sure she will have a wonderful life with you.

(50,835 posts)You need to listen to "Bron-y-Aur Stomp" on Led Zeppelin II. It's a great song in its own right, but also as a tribute to Robert Plant's dog.

(2,809 posts)I'd operate a pupper rescue.
Abandoned dogs frequently turned up at a remote place I lived in Texas, became quite the pack of them. Unfortunately some of them already had heartworms, so they had to be humanely put down. My vet had the best way of doing so: first a shot overdose of anesthetic, they never knew what hit them next.
But that job ended, my cousin took the remaining 2 animals and one relocated with me on many travel gigs. "Bubba"
Many a trip across I-40 New Mexico, I've fed many Abandoned dogs. It's all I can do.
If I could full time rescue them all I would.

(4,243 posts)and they all came to us as "throwaways." We lived one block from the local pound, so they dumped them up the hill where all the kids play. We lived at the bottom of the hill. One "dumping" was a box full of about 8 week old black puppies. Luckily, by the time I realized I really wanted one to keep as my own, they'd all found homes.
But one of the best dogs I've ever had was a scrawny, mangy dog someone had dumped some months prior. He finally found his way to my house. Took me about six months to get him to trust me enough to let me feed him by hand and pet him. I thought at first he was some kind of afghan hound... he was that scrawny looking. One of the things he did that broke my heart was when I gave him a big dog Milk bone, he took it and ran to the side of the house and buried it. He was still afraid the food wasn't going to keep coming.
Just before Christmas that year, I finally got him to follow me into the house, to the warmth of the fireplace, and out of the snow. We took him to the vet and had him treated for worms (including heartworm), and severe mange. There were more than a few other treatments we had to give him, he really was a mess. But, oh, did he pay me back many times over!
Turns out this scrawny dog, when loved, fed, and properly cared for was a Leonburgher! He was huge! And he protected me like nothing else ever had (except for one attack cat who went flying across the room at someone he didn't like). Yet he was totally gentle and loving to all my cats.
He also taught himself to "help" me... he'd bring me things when I was having a hard time walking. He even found a way to help me get up off the floor when hubby would rub my back. I was making plans to take enroll him as a "therapy" dog in hospitals and nursing homes. He had the perfect temperament for it.
I always dread Christmas now. I lost him on Christmas day, three years ago. I bless the day he came into my life, and curse those who could take such a sweet, loving soul and treat him so badly. He'd been abused, we discovered... the first time we asked him to "sit" the look of fright in his face was horrible to see. I still miss him so bad, it hurts like hell.
There'll never be another one like him in my life. Last year, we adopted a dog who'd been adopted out prior every month for the past three months, and returned each time. While I understand why, she's still with us... she's part of our family and we're her pack. As she grows older, I hope she'll settle down enough I can walk her. She weighs 100 lbs. I don't weigh quite 90 lbs. and she's already broken my leg once! Too much size and energy for this old lady. But love will find a way, I gotta believe! (LOL)
There's something very special about the critters we rescue. They know, and they try extra hard for us, I believe. In return, we love them even more. And the holes they leave in our hearts when they cross the bridge never quite seem to heal. Take the pearly gates all you want. Give me the Rainbow Bridge and the babies who've gone before me, along with the energy to play with them once again. That's my heaven.

(4,243 posts)that there are so many of us who try to do right by these castaways. I blew it when we were looking for a home in this little town. I should have taken the cement block house that had about 4 acres of uncleared land with it. I think I'd have been much happier... no one to complain about a barking dog! (LOL)
My only regret is my age and disabilities keep me from doing what I loved so much to do in my younger days. That, and my cats are aging. I lose one or more every year or two now. Heartbreaks don't get any easier.
But I'm proud to call you "Soul Sister" in our love and efforts through the years! May there be many, many more creatures, big and small, we can help when needed.
