We lost our lovely special soul, Jagger, yesterday.

He was only 8. Best we can tell he developed a fast-moving lymphoma in Feb-March. He was ravenous (broke into cat, dog food storage); he lost his eyesight; became lethargic - this former canine athlete; finally, in the past couple days he - very uncharacteristically - became destructive when left alone at home for a few hours. No permanent damage - not Jagger's style. A lover not a fighter.

We got Jagger off Craigslist in 2018. For a couple of senior citizens, it was a crazy stupid decision! We would be traveling to France in a couple months (a rare event for us - international travel). We had been dogless for almost a year after the passing of our prior dog at age 12. Were giving dog-free life a try. Turned out it's not us.

So, as one does, we began looking for a dog a couple months ahead of our trip, figuring it would take time. When I saw Jagger on Craigslist, full-on smile up into the camera...eyes and all...I immediately sent it to my husband, the brakes in our relationship (I'm the accelerator). But he, too, was instantly captivated. When we learned Jagger's back story, we were even more drawn. He had been living on a chain on a mountainside nearby. Yet, he held no bitterness or anger. He was so elated to join us on our small ranch - 2 active empty nesters. His first week with us, he and my husband went on a 19-mile hike (yes, in one day!). That sealed it.

Jagger never went after our chickens or cats. He learned to be a good trail dog with our little horse group. He came, sat, lay down - no one ever taught him. He just understood. All he wanted was to please and love - and guard - us. And that he did. Very, very well.

I really hope my extreme grief starts to lift. Right now it's debilitating. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for letting me share. 😢

send peace and comfort to his grieving loved ones.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your precious Jagger. Losing our beloved companions is so very hard, so truly heartbreaking. Grieve as much as you need to. .the pain will lessen, eventually, and then you can remember him with joy.

We who are owned by the furries are here for you.

I believe we will be reunited with our pet children - once a few years ago I had a dream. I was in a building with a lot of windows in it when a bus pulled up outside and I saw my two Australian Shepherds that had passed a few years before They were on the bus and I was frantic to run out and get on it with them but I was held back and I heard one of the Aussies say to me, you can't take this bus, not yet. You have to stay where you are now. I will never forget that and it says all it needs to.
You will be with your fur baby again and all those who came before and those who will come after.
Hugs...

I have lost a couple of my canine kids to lymphoma now. It works so fast.

I've posted a number of times about losing dogs, cats, horses, donkeys here. DU is a wonderful shoulder to lean on. Our friends here really care, and can relate to your grief.

Big hugs, and hope this helps a little:

They are such precious souls.

The only thing that ever helped my grief over losing a furry family member was adopting another, itty-bitty, furry family member. After a period of mourning of course, and it didn't take away the loss, but was a good and heartwarming distraction.

A wonderful thing happened when I could swear my favorite kitty and soul-mate, Shakespeare, came back to me in a second kitty lifetime. A few years later, I got a new kitty, Gabriel, and he had so many quirks and odd traits that were identical, I had no choice but to believe he was Shakespeare returned to me.

Jagger was as lucky to have you as you are to have had him.

It breaks our hearts to lose a loved one. I believe their love lives on in our hearts, always.

Leonard Cohen said, There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.
Jagger’s light still shines in your heart now. Nothing can ever take that away from you.

My last dog died of lymphoma unexpectedly as well.
She was only with me for a couple of years and died while I was on a trip.
I am so sad and sorry you are going through this; I know how tough it is.

I'm sorry your pup died while you were away!

We are going on a trip soon and this was an added concern.
