I posted the following on Facebook. The response has been underwhelming:
"So this rat was living under the deck of a nearby restaurant that had closed after the pandemic. She was obviously a domestic pet rat that escaped or was let go. She had lived there for over a year and a half. She survived two winters, multiple traps and a visit from the Orkin man. She also survived an animal attack but was left with a bad eye injury. Now that the restaurant is open, she could not stay. She also would certainly not survive another winter, so I took her in. I have all ready spent a ridiculous amount of money just to give her a good home. Now she needs surgery to remove her eye. Apparently, it's not all that rare an operation for pet rodents. But it is not cheap. She is well habitated to me. She knows her name and comes when I call her. She is a survivor and she deserves to live out a good life like any pet. I am asking anyone that can to donate to the gofundme fundraiser page I have set up. If you can't donate, then at least, please, share this post. Thanks."
I got a few thumbs up, several raspberry emoji and a couple shares. I got one $5 donation.
I am a retiree as of today! I am now "living on a fixed income" so I could use all the help I can get. I'm asking the DU community to show that rats, too, are worthy of compassion.

I know she's just a rat, but she has earned a good life. Thank you, Shane.

(727 posts)I tried Facebook. I tried friends at work. I tried neighbors. Nobody has responded like the people and friends I don't even know here at DU. What a great community!

(727 posts)No contribution is a modest contribution. Couldn't hit that goal without it!

(12,934 posts)Gets ulcers on her cornea Last time it flared up she went to an eye surgeon to release pressure in her eye. I hope she does not have to lose an eye . But if she does I know she will be fine and adapt. She's a beautiful himalayan flame point girl ,sweet ,loving and cuddly ,her fur is mind-blowingly soft.
I love cats first ,I love rats too. I hate being on disability, because its really hard to exist on what disability pays. However when my check comes in and everythings paid for and if I got some to spare I might send some $$.For that dear ratto,Marcy.
