UK government may ban American XL bully dogs after a child was attacked

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s home secretary said Monday she is seeking “urgent advice” on banning a type of American Bully dog, highlighting an attack on a 11-year-old girl over the weekend.

Suella Braverman said she has commissioned advice on outlawing XL Bully dogs after police said they were investigating an incident in the central English city of Birmingham on Saturday, when a girl was injured by one of the dogs. Two men who intervened were also injured.

“This is appalling. The American XL Bully is a clear and lethal danger to our communities, particularly to children,” Braverman wrote on social media. ”We can’t go on like this.”

Police said the incident took place on a busy road after the dog broke free from its owner. The girl sustained serious injuries to her shoulders and forearms, and was recovering after hospital treatment. The animal was seized by officers and officials will consider what to do with the animal, police added.

XL bully dogs: Why adding the controversial breed to the Dangerous Dogs Act may not work

Banning American XL bullys is not as simple as updating the Dangerous Dogs Act - because they aren't actually a breed at all, according to one expert.

Suella Braverman has said she is seeking "urgent advice" after footage showed a crossbreed XL bully/Staffordshire bull terrier puppy attacking an 11-year-old girl and a man in Birmingham.

American Bully XL dogs have been linked with several attacks in recent months, including one near Wrexham in north Wales, in which 22 pregnant sheep were killed.

And earlier this year, Jonathan Hogg, 37, died after being attacked while looking after his friend's dog, reported to be an XL bully.

It could become the fifth group of dogs banned in the UK - joining the pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo Argentino and the fila Brasileiro.

Why is the UK banning American XL Bully dogs?

American Bully XL dogs are to be banned in the UK by the end of the year, the country's Prime Minster Rishi Sunak has announced.

It comes after a man in England died following what Mr Sunak described as "another suspected XL bully attack" on Thursday. It was the latest in a series of deadly incidents.

Mr Sunak said he had ordered work to legally define the breed behind the recent attacks so it can be banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act, which applies in England, Wales and Scotland.

What is an American bully XL?

The XL is the largest of four types of American Bully: standard, pocket, classic and XL.
