Related: About this forumHorrible day today. I needed to write this. New here so sorry if it's the wrong forum.
I'm waiting for 3 pm when the vet will come to my house to put my 15 year old Australian shepherd to sleep. He's on his second bout with MAST cell cancer. Had a huge tumor removed back in October 2022 and he did amazing. It was like he'd been de-aged back to 6 or 7. We'd go for walks and he'd come home and run laps in the back yard afterwards, lol. Now the disease has come back with a vengeance. Two huge tumors behind each front leg, one is as big as a baseball. I've just been trying to keep him happy and comfortable since I found them this August near his bday. He lost the ability to get up on his own this past Friday and can no longer walk now. He's gone from 60 pounds at his peak to 30 now. He's just skin and bones. Have had him in male diapers for 3 months now. Feeding him anything he can desire. He loves waffles but hasn't eaten anything for 3 days, just water now.
Not sure what I'll do without him around. I don't have any human children so he's essentially my child. He was always a strange little dude. Called him my hippy dog because he always acted like he was tripping on something as he grew up. I'd go to feed him and unlike most dogs, he's just stare at it or look at the ceiling, anything but inhaling his food. Sometimes I'd find him just staring at the walls or the ceiling, haha. One time as a puppy I saw him stick most of his snout under water in the water bowl and blow bubbles! Seriously! And he was a super pacifist too. I wasn't allowed to hug my girlfriend (at the time) or to goof around (play fight with my buddies), absolutely no dancing was allowed around him, no running (he'd nip your ass to make you stop), nothing resembling violence of any kind in his eyes. He's always break up other dos who he deemed were playing too rough, etc...
He was super humble and never growled at anyone or even came close to biting them, even at the vets when they accidentally hurt him. He'd always wait for treats or anything like that.
I found the little dude while at one of my old jobs. I was a wetlands scientist for 15 years with the gov't and one day out walking a wooded site I saw this little dude come walking up to me. Maybe 4 weeks old at the time. Covered in ticks, fleas, mud, blood, who knows what else. I searched around for his mommy or any other siblings but it was just him. There weren't any houses around for miles. I took him home and bathed him and he fought me the whole time. Just screaming and trying to get out of the bathtub. This is no lie....for 10 years afterwards he refused to come near me if I was in the bathroom or anywhere near that tub! Even in the last 5 years he would put up a struggle to get out of the tub during baths. It was always a glorious battle.
After I found him he immediately settled in with his 2 older sisters, an eleven year old chow/german shepherd mix and a four year old wolf/german shepherd mix. The 2 sisters didn't always get along but boy did they ever love that little puppy. If one started playing too rough with him the other would let the offending sister know. One one night back in November of 2011, I was walking the Aussie with the wolf/shep on our neighborhood road and a pitbull came running at us from the front steps of the house we were passing. The Aussie didn't hesitate even an instant and jumped in front of the pitbull and started fighting with it to protect us. Both of my dogs were on leashes so we were all at a disadvantage. I jumped on the pitbull to break it up (I just reacted, didn't stop to think) and the pitbull bit me pretty good and I hollered out in pain. My other dog had just be sitting on her hind quarters the whole time we were fighting the pitbull but when I yelled in pain, she jumped up and got on that pitbull in an instant. Never seen anything like it. She grabbed it by the throat and threw it off of me. Then she jumped on it and held it my throat until it's owners finally decided to stop it. I told the wolf/shep to "come" and she let the pit up and came to me. Again, never saw anything like it. Still don't know how she didn't kill it but it had blood around it's throat.
My poor little Aussie wasn't injured except for a small puncture wound on his back and a cut ear. I ended up with the worst of it and spent a few hours at the ER getting stitched up but was just a minor hand wound. Ever since, people ask me why I spoil my dogs so much and I tell them that I owe everything to that little Aussie.
His oldest sister passed in 2013 and the wolf/shep in 2019. He's now the last of that original pack. Don't know what I'm going to do without hearing his "uhh uh uhhhh" call to tell me he needs something. I live in NC now but am from Va. Going to drive home tonight and bury him on my farmland next to his two sisters and all of my other dogs I've had. Three bassett hound mixes, 3 GSD mixes, 2 beagles, and a Boston terrier. When I die my ashes will be mixed with the soil next to them.

(120,834 posts)A beautiful tribute to a beloved friend. You gave him a good life and you're letting him go in the kindest way, as much as it hurts you.
"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we would still live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan."

(24,145 posts)He sounds like a wonderful little guy. You have given him a good life. Letting him go peacefully at home, with you holding him, I'm sure he knows you love him.
We always bury a piece of our heart when we lose our fur kids. Take care of yourself.

(6,302 posts)I have had Aussies for 50 years and they are the best. Every time you lose one it's another hole in your heart. Maybe when the pain is gone you will think about another pup. We really can't live without them.

Lady of the Beasts, please take Your little one gently home in Your loving arms, and send peace and comfort to his grieving human.
By the way, my Alaskan Mal used to blow bubbles in his very large water bowl. Cracked me up every time.

(15,531 posts)lovely stories of your dogs. They enrich our lives. We always had dogs. Many years ago when my sister were grown and out of the house we decided to give my dad a rescue puppy for his birthday. He took the dog back the next day. When I asked him why he said he just couldn't go through the loss of another dog. I know how he felt. And how you feel now.

(2,527 posts)If possible, when he is gone, try to focus on all the good times--YEARS of good times. I always know that if they could, my dogs would leave me with "Thanks for everything. I had a great time!" You have to get through it, but once there, you will smile when thinking about him. We still talk about the things a dog we had in the 70's used to do. We talk very regularly about our most recent lost one, left two years ago. He was so funny when he did this, how he made us laugh when he did that. I hope you get there without too much pain.

(2,954 posts)and a having had two others who both lived to be 16, but who were not in great shape their final year or so, I feel this. You have some tear-filled days ahead, I fear. Things will eventually improve, though. Hang in there.
Aussies are so smart, loving, brave. They want to please. And, yeah, they absolutely have senses of humor.
Weve put our grief at their losses at arms length by adopting pups. Are your circumstances such that you could do that? One more time?

(25,904 posts)we presume from cancer.
In July, we adopted Coltrane. Very different from Jag - playful pup where Jaggy was loyal protector, and a balm for the heart!
While I still have a deep ache in my heart for Jag - he was gone too soon and deserved better, loving Colt is a gift!
I am seeing that several of my friends who've lost pups this year to old age or illness are bringing home new bundles of joy!
There's nothin' like a good dog to raise one's spirits... but you knew this.

(1,445 posts)personal to me.We have a ton in common. A TON. I can tell you are a very kind person and life has given you many beautiful living creatures to care for.
First I am feeling sorrow for the separation from your beloved friend. Am sure it was felt on both sides.
Sometimes the greatest gift you can give to the one who left is to keep your ears, eyes and heart open. Someone may come into your life to sit by your side in your sorrow.
There are so many many homeless and even if you feel you are not ready sometimes if you open yourself to the universe they may appear like from nowhere.
Bless you. Bless you big time.

(26 posts)The passing of your last baby will be a little harder then the rest, I lost the last of my 5 poodles, little Emma at the end of April.
She died from brain cancer 1 day after her 15th birthday. Her sister, Spirit, passed 6 months earlier due to COPD, her poor little heart finally gave out. Their grandmother, Abby, died 6 months before Spirit of seizures at almost 19 years. Abby' daughter, and the girl's mother, LumLum left us 8 years ago due to liver cancer and her brother Riley died 5 years later due to kidney cancer. Cancer seems to run rampant among animals and people these days. I had to laugh about having your pets with you at the end, as I plan do something similar; I plan to have a special box built to put my ashes in it along with all my wonder little doggies and have them buried with me. I only ask one thing of God to please let me have all my pets with me in heaven. Remember mourning you pet is as difficult as losing a human family member or friend, our society just doesn't place the important on it the same way it fails to acknowledge the loss of miscarriages and divorces. They all cause great pain and should be acknowledged by our friends and family. I will send you my prayers but I know you will see them again someday but at a different place.

(642 posts)It's so hard to lose such a beloved and faithful friend. He has been so lucky to have you; he stayed alive extra long to love you I think.
I'm about to lose my pup to kidney failure so I share your grief. I wish neither of us were grieving but I think our companions were worth every tear.
Strength.

(6,341 posts)Our second dog was put to sleep six years ago. I am still not over either one. The first was in 2015. My sweet girl. The male made it till 2017. I miss them so much. Between my health and the owner of the place saying no to another dog, I may never have one around again. NO matter. They are waiting for me.

(222,124 posts)And I know how tough this can be and how much you miss them. I lost my 16-year-old pup last year and I still think about him so much, I'd had him since he was a puppy - pet shop rescue. I know that nothing I can say will make it easier, but please remember the love and the life that you gave him and how fortunate it was that he found you...
