(556 posts)Given the list of "foods" in which xylitol appears, I am guessing that it is not unusual for people to give their pets human candy. In this case, artificially sweetened.

(10,321 posts)they aren't supposed to, like medicine bottles, remote controls, shoes. My late brother's shih tzus always had a thing for chapstick and ate several tubes. Fortunately it didn't contain zylitol. One time, when I took my cat to the vet, a puppy was having its stomach pumped for ingesting a whole bottle of Atarax (including the bottle.)

(556 posts)Dogs are great pets, but they do have a tendency to eat whatever is in front of them, whether or not there's food value.
We had a dog that gave a toad a trial lick. Did not go well. He found out what all those knobby things were for.
