Nothing open today of course.
Andreas is 11 years old and he's been throwing up now and then (not particularly unusual).
However, I noticed some cat droppings on the rug in the living room this a.m. and cleaned that up and found Andreas not far away. He is walking SO slow. He doesn't seem to respond to anything, even his name.
Its like he has had a stroke or something. He is an indoor only kitty and I sure hope he gets better real fast as he doesn't like crates and he does and will bite!
Yikes!
Send good thoughts, messages and prayers to Mr. Andy as he's known. He was my late husband's cat and he called him that, "Mister Andy".
The thought of losing him is frightening to me. I've been in a very poor state of mind lately as the anniversary of my husband falling ill is upon us today.
Get Well Soon Mister Andy!
Thanks for thoughts and prayers.

(4,502 posts)Find a veterinarian who is working today, somewhere. I have been in this situation. You will be glad you tried, and it may save Andreas.

(3,571 posts)picked up or crated. Our girl Sophie is a former feral and I can't even pick her up, yet she will allow my husband to do so. When hubby was in hospital followed by rehab, I had a really hard time with her.
Hope Andreas will get well. Take care of yourself, too. Praying for all of you! 🙏🙏

(113,130 posts)Things to check: use a penlight and see if his pupils are equal. See if one side is reacting more slowly than the other. Check to see if he can see at all, swipe your hand very close to his face and see if he withdraws. Look how he's walking. Are all four limbs moving well and equally? How's his balance? You'll want to tell the vet about anything that's not quite right.
Cat poop on a rug where you will see it is often a call for help. Is there an emergency vet close by?
Best way to get the cat into a carrier: put the carrier up on a surface--table, bed, kitchen counter.--with the door flush against the edge. Pick the cat up in sort of a football hold, front and back supported. and push him into the carrier/crate. He's not going to want to fall, so he's likely to go in fairly meekly. It worked on HRH, who could be a holy terror about it.
If there is no e-vet, keep him as quiet and comfortable as possible. Good luck to both.

(21,067 posts)They ran blood work on him and checked him and and they couldn't find anything wrong.
So, I brought him home and he is in the bathroom and opted to stay in the carrier which is where he is now with a litter box and food and water.
They told me if he doesn't get any better, I may opt to have him put down.
I still have my Mister Andy for now anyway.
I wish I knew what was wrong.
Thank you guys for your kind words and it was two years ago to this day that my late husband fell ill and was dx'd with vascular dementia. What a sad life I am living these days.

(21,067 posts)I just woke up and there Mr. Andy the Andreas was looking at me!
He is back! YES!
I'm glad I didn't opt for the "euthanasia" option.
He's a lot better now and up and around again and purring!
Your wonderful great prayers and miraculous thoughts have healed Andreas!
So, he's back ...
What a nightmare this has been. Hopefully, this is the beginning of the end of this.
Thank you everyone!

(21,067 posts)Andreas isn't eating much (if any).
So, I tried my old trick, open a can of tuna.
Once Andreas got a whiff of the tuna, he started drinking up the juice right away and ate quite a bit of the tuna.
I think he is a lot better now and he is no longer in a stupor.
He's laying in his cat bed by the window now watching the world go by.
Thanks again for your positive wishes and prayers for my Dear Mr. Andy everyone!

I think I figured it out!
I was told to use cannabis for the neuropathy in my feet. So, I bought some of it a couple of weeks ago and I think that Andreas got sick from it via contact with the smoke!
It wasn't helping my pain out that much anyway but wow, who would have thought?
However, the cannabis doesn't explain what that object was I found on the bed. It was the size of a small mouse. Maybe being he had swallowed that and the cannabis combined caused Andreas to get so sick! Any ideas on this at all?
I'm so glad I did not take their advice and have him euthanized! Wow!
So this is a lesson for all of us, and a pricey one at that!
Thanks for all of the healing vibes. It means a lot and also thank you for the hearts!
I've never had so many of them all of the years I've been on the DU!

(21,067 posts)I am so glad I didn't listen to that woman at the vet.
Boy was she a case!
She wanted me to bring Andreas back yesterday and have him put down!
I did no such thing thank god for that.
I'd be so upset if Andy was gone.
I cannot handle any more loss, its been too much!
The good thing is that he was thoroughly checked out. He'd never been to a vet in his life!
He is 100% blood work wise which means no diabetes or other problems that are seen in cats, esp. older ones; males in particular.

(340 posts)Glad that Andreas has eight lives left. 11 isn't terribly old for a cat these days. Continued blessings for you both!

(21,067 posts)Eleven years is not very old for a cat these days!
Andreas and his brother Silver were adopted from the local kill shelter as kittens. They were not exactly the pick of the litter types of kittens (gray tabby striped).
My husband was so depressed after his kitty that lived to be eighteen years old died! The kitty before her lived to be seventeen!
So yes, eleven is not that old for cats that live indoors. They live much longer if you keep them inside and they are a lot happier too. I have three cats, all are from the same kill shelter. The youngest is seven years old and a lovely black cat. All of them are flea free and no, I don't use any chemicals on them, just a flea comb.
I don't know what I'd do without my trio of love!
Thanks again for the good thoughts and well wishes.
They have worked obviously!
