(17,757 posts)Along with over 6,000 other Marines and the Sailors that were supporting them. Lest we forget.
I had an uncle who was one of the roughly 20,000 wounded. He carried three things to his grave, Japanese shrapnel, and a hatred for all things Japan and The American Red Cross. He claimed that during his extended hospital treatment that the Red Cross would shake the wounded down for money for things that they were supposed to provide for free. Every time that there was Red Cross fundraisers in his kid' schools, (common in the 50s and 60s) it would set him off. People around him saw him as a bitter old man, as PTSD had not been invented yet, and men of his generation were supposed to suck it up and move on without comment....
War brings out the best in some people and the worst in others.
Rest in Peace, Uncle Harry.

(10,116 posts)Pfc. Robert Campbell captured a picture of both. The Marine nearest the camera is my 7th grade social studies teacher/freshman football coach. He was 19. I never knew a thing about it until after his death.
