As LBJ was the first to say, Civil Rights Act, signed today 1964, would have been almost impossible to pass in Senate in the absence of his partnership with Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen of Illinois [to left of Johnson]:

I asked Lady Bird Johnson in 1995 which U.S. Senators were most admired by LBJ. Her reply was: conservative Southern Senators who risked their careers and livelihoods to stand up for civil rights.

"Let us close the springs of racial poison...and make our Nation whole," said LBJ to Americans on TV while signing Civil Rights Act, today 1964--link to two-minute video:

Are there any water fountains left in Alabama or did they pull them all out?

He knew what his actions would do too He mentioned it in speeches, but he was a decent enough southern man to see it through.
Hard now to believe now how much I despised that man when I was draft age.
