On this day, July 14, 1965, Adlai Stevenson died.

“We travel together, passengers on a little space ship, dependent on its vulnerable reserves of air and soil...preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work and, I will say, the love we give our fragile craft.”
Adlai Stevenson in last major speech before dying today 1965

standing in front of our old tv listening to him talk about nuclear disarmament and the dangers of above ground testing.

They took me to Logan Airport to see him
when he spoke in Boston and I was small enough to be on Dad's shoulders. I saw the homburg hat that I recognized from the Life magazine cover. Then we had to get quickly out of there as the Mass. State Troopers were doing a flying wedge move to clear the tarmac.
As a young child Adlai and Abraham Lincoln were my two American mythopolitical heroes. A bit later on, FDR
and Eleanor moved in with them, mostly due to hearing mum and Dad recount the Roosevelt litany.

Years later I was working at a camp in Maine and heard about his death on a London street.
A heart attack the radio voice said....

All the way with Adlai from a time long ago.

"I have Bloomington to thank for the most important lesson I have learned, that in quiet places reason abounds, that in quiet people there is vision and purpose, that many things are revealed to the humble that are hidden from the great."

The photos were quite poignant and the quote especially so. Thanks
