I grew up several miles inland just up the coast from the eye. It was the first major hurricane I remember hitting us. I was almost six. Wind gusts of 120 mph recorded near by. All the typical destruction, roads washed out, no electricity for days, etc. And my poor mother was nine months pregnant.

I remember it being a great lark. I grew up in Maryland, and we were without power for several days also. There were a few restaurants open, including a Frisches Big Boy. Prior to that, we never went out to eat. I thought the whole thing was great because we got to go there a couple times, and it was dark in our house.
