On this day, July 25, 1943, the Grand Council of Fascism voted a motion of no confidence against Benito Mussolini.

I didn't know that. I thought he was in charge right up until he and the lovely Mrs. Mussolini were hanged in 1945.

Mussolini was shot with his mistress, not his wife. NNadir Jul 2024 #2

Mussolini’s wife survived World War II and died in 1979, aged 89.

It was Clara Pettaci, Mussolini’s mistress who was executed with him and had her corpse hung by her ankles at a gas station.

The bodies of Mussolini, his mistress and several members of his puppet government were transported to Milan, where they we kicked, spat upon and otherwise defiled by angry crowds. The hanging of their mutilated bodies in the lot of a gas station in a public square let to the famous pictures that spread around the world. Hitler apparently either saw the pictures or was aware of them, which led him to committing suicide with orders to burn his and his new wife, Eva Hitler's body being burned. The Soviets were able to recover Hitler's skull, and the KGB kept it for many years, since Stalin thought he might like to deny that Hitler had been killed.
