cross post: Colleges are turning students' phones into surveillance machines

https://www.democraticunderground.com/100212813406

Short-range phone sensors and campuswide WiFi networks are empowering colleges across the United States to track hundreds of thousands of students more precisely than ever before. Dozens of schools now use such technology to monitor students’ academic performance, analyze their conduct or assess their mental health.

I think my phone is capable of scheduling when to enable and disable Bluetooth, WiFi... Perhaps buy a trackfone, ducttape it under a desk. Swap the battery once a week or lose points.

they can still use the cell signal to triangulate your location... so the only real option is to power down and/or remove the battery when not using it.

going off the grid is hard.

Also, buy a number of throw away phones, but be aware that the phone number assigned to your phone can be tracked back to the store and time/date and most stores have surveilance cameras to track purchases...

Try to find stores that don't track, or create a sock puppet account with a real debit card (pre-paid and with a fake ID) and then purchase your thow away online.

If you really want to go incognito, use the throw away ONCE and then throw it away, preferably by crushing it or shredding it first.

This is for the paranoid and/or contract killers... lol
