Thanks to Trump, Labor Board gave employers permission to search your personal property.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has given employers a sweeping ability to increase surveillance on their employees. The case overturns years of labor law that protected the privacy of workers.
On June 24th, the board issued a ruling that expanded an employers right to surveil their workforce. In the decision, the board said that employers have the right to search employees personal property while they are on the companys property. This would include allowing a boss to search someones car, locker, or personal workspace. T
he board also said that a company can track employee activity on company-provided devices, networks, and computer systems.
The ruling, which will be known as Verizon Wireless, applied the Boeing Rule which said that companies can institute policies that govern what is and is not allowed in the workplace.

(12,712 posts)We are now in stage called surveillance capitalism, (look it up if you want to know more) and there will be a push for more and more invasions of privacy and draconian measures to surveil employees and consumers.
When the NLRB promotes or encourages that, it is a serious threat to the population and that needs to be addressed and countermanded or we go farther down that rabbit hole which may be endless. In other words, they more they can invade privacy on more fronts, the more that influence, power and control they will have up to the point of making reversals of these kinds of infractions more difficult and/or impossible.
As capitalism reaches its apocalyptic phase, it is seemingly innocuous decisions like this that take on a very dark and threatening aura and this is a play for keeps and winner takes all environment, which tends to reflect the Fascist/oligarchical approaches and policies of the GOP/Trump which is clearly a threat to democracy in the long-run.

(7,962 posts)Especially for people like me working for a government agency like the Department of Energy. Because of potentially confidential info, my use of my company laptop is tightly regulated. I can use it at home but I connect via an encrypted VPN and of course, I cant use it for other than work.
Now, a company guard searching an employee car or belongings is another matter all together. Its pushing it too far. That should only be required for people working in classified areas where you are indeed searched randomly as you go in and out because of national security concerns. Giving any employer the power to do this is an abuse.

I think working from home might complicate things quite a bit.
Of course when working from home, we can not have anything that is classified with us. So we are restricted on working on non-classified stuff.
I do not ask him any personal questions about his work. Mothers can be overbearing as it is.
He is recuperating from hernia surgery right now, and I don't know how much he is working. I inquire only about his health.
