WASHINGTON A report released this week claims that Catholic Bishops spent more than $2 million on same-sex marriage ballot measures in four states, all of which failed.
The Human Rights Campaign highlights the disconnect between the spending decisions by the churchs hierarchy, and the Catholic laity, which, according to a Public Religion Research Institute poll support same-sex marriage at 60 percent, with 83 percent of Catholics saying their bishops do not influence their votes.
The American people went to the polls and affirmed one of the core values of the Roman Catholic Church: the belief that all humans are worthy of dignity, respect and love, said HRC President Chad Griffin.
Also from HRC, the National Organization for Marriage revealed this week that donations declined nearly $3 million in one year, and that just two donors contributed nearly 75 percent of the organizations $6.2 million budget in 2011, with donations of $2.4 million each.
