Gov. Maggie Hassan

New Hampshire has become the 19th state adopting medical marijuana. Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Maggie Hassan (D) signed into law House Bill 573. The bill passed both chambers of the legislature with overwhelmingly bipartisan support.

The new law will allow doctors to recommend medical marijuana to patients with certain medical conditions and create a tightly regulated system for the distribution of medical marijuana. Gov. Hassan said about the new law “legalizes the use of medical marijuana in a way that makes sense for the State of New Hampshire and gives health providers another option to help New Hampshire’s seriously ill patients.”

Under the new medical marijuana program patients and caregivers will be required to register with the state. Patients will be able to get medical marijuana at one of four non-profit treatments that will be set up throughout New Hampshire that will be carefully regulated by the state. Patients won’t, though, be allowed to grow their own medical marijuana. The homegrowing provision was removed from the law as part of a final compromise to get it approved.

Now that this new law has been signed, medical marijuana is legal in all of New England.
