Arrest made in toddler killed in shooting in north St. Louis County

ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KTVI) – Homicide detectives with the St. Louis County Police Department are investigating the shooting death of a toddler in a north county neighborhood. The 21-month-old boy was shot in the torso. He was driven by a woman to St. Mary’s Hospital where the he was pronounced dead.

Police say the shooting occurred at a residence in the 7700 block of Utica Drive in Hanley Hills. Investigators believe the shooting was accidental, with the victim picking up a loaded handgun and shooting himself.

Detectives have arrested a person.

I had to read it twice to determine it was a self inflicted injury (at least I think that is qhat they are saying)

"Detectives arrested a person"- what were their other choices?

I would like to know who was arrested and if the gun owner legally possessed the firearm.

Moreover, what does a purported accidental shooting without a great deal more information have to do with "gun politics, gun control laws, the Second Amendment, the use of firearms for self-defense, and the use of firearms to commit crime and violence?"
