As of August 26th, the US has had 247 mass shootings in the 238 days of 2015.
For those keeping track, that's an average of more than one shooting per day.
These numbers are according to the Mass Shooting Tracker created by the anti-gun subreddit Guns Are Cool.
Wednesday morning's stunning on-air fatal shooting in Roanoke, Virginia of a television reporter and a photographer wasn't even the first shooting of the day. Roughly three hours earlier at 3:15 a.m., four people were shot during a home invasion in Minneapolis.

(62,235 posts)the report was done. What makes this shooting so much more newsworthy to covered all day long compared to the unreported shootings in another state? It was pure media on media, self-promotion for the newsies, if-it-bleeds-it-leads, greed.

Preventable tragedy? He passed his background check and bought his gun legally. He had no criminal record or history of mental illness. He fired six shots, something that has been technologically feasible since 1835.
What are you proposing that could have prevented this tragedy?

For the more youthful, back in the day when government spending was calculated the "old way," some 50% of monies was devoted to Defense. What to do.
Well, what was done was to whittle off much of the spending from Defense, and put it into Health Ed. Welfare, SS, etc. Magic! Our Defense spending shrunk to unimaginable levels with the (key)stroke of a pen!
Now, we come to the old "Mass Murder" definition. It used to be four or more murders in one setting (not including the Punk). This, according to the FBI. Even the gun-happy Mother Jones had to admit a couple years back that since 1981, the U.S. experienced two (2) mass shootings a year. What to do.
Well, the definitions underwent more changes than Windows has operating systems: We now have Mass Murder downgraded to three (3) in one setting (not including the Punk). This, I believe, according to the FBI for some reason. Nice increase, but even better there is the Active Shooter, where for the duration of an event we get to call it "active," and routinely compare it with the Mass Murderr of yore, even if the Punk kills no one, including himself. But wait! Now we have MassShooting® where presumably some punk shoots at four (4) or more people in one setting. Wow! Huge numbers never seen before, all with a keystroke.
But don't get fixated on the latest "data." I'm waiting for the "MassWouldaMurderedActiveMassiveShootings© to supplant the latest chart-buster. Damn! Who'd thunk Luckenbach, Texas would be an ISIS-Zone of violence!

(18,576 posts)...is when four or more people are shot in an event, or related series of events, likely without a cooling off period.

The FBI has defined "mass murder" to be 4 or more murders within a single event. When shootings occur, and there's plenty of them, when one person fires and hits 4 or more people in a single event or series of related events, there's a "mass shooting". In the US IIRC there's around 10,000 murders by firearm per year and probably 3 or 4 times that number of woundings. It does stand to reason that, with around 150 people shot per day, at least a few will be shot in the same place by the same dude.
I'm not seeing anything news worthy here.

Wonder of they count our nightly gang shoot outs as "Mass Shootings"?

(49,445 posts)...then you also need to go back in time, say, 40 years, and apply the new definition to every one of those years.
Then make a chart so we can be informed about how things are going in this county, so we can compare year-to-year and look for trends and causes and such.
Are you going to do that? Are the people you're quoting and linking to going to do that?
Of course not! You just want another social-media meme to wring hands about.
