Donald Trump, once an advocate of control over the sale of some types of firearms, has come out forcefully in favor of a laissez faire approach to gun control, declaring there should be a national right to carry concealed weapons across the nation.
The Republican presidential frontrunners gun policy, which also argues against expansions of background checks for gun owners and chimes with the campaign aims of the National Rifle Association is only the second policy announcement since announcing his campaign in June.
The policy paper released on Friday also included support for mandatory minimum prison sentences for violent crimes, drawing from a Virginia-based experimental program from the 1990s named Project Exile which Trump suggested be implemented across the country. The program would push for anyone found to be illegally in possession of a firearm to be sentenced to a minimum of five years in federal prison.
Trump said the program, criticized by Barack Obamas administration, was in fact a success, decreasing murders committed with firearms and clearing felons from the streets, adding: We need to bring back and expand programs like Project Exile and get gang members and drug dealers off the street.

(4,462 posts)Trump's position on guns has "evolved" to match that of a majority of Americans, and more importantly for Trump now, an overwhelming majority of Republican primary voters.
I imagine this will not improve his standing with Democratic gun rights supporters, nor make much of a difference, for or against, national concealed carry reciprocity policies.

You're kidding. You say this seriously? absolutely no one was surprised at trump's reversal on some gun control issues? I'm sure thousands maybe millions would be surprised at his flip.
Trump on Gun Control: Limit restrictions on guns. Ban some assault weapons and extend the waiting period for purchase.
During a 2013 interview with Fox, defined himself as, a very strong person on {2ndA}. He believes guns are necessary for self-defense and has written that he generally opposes gun control. In his 2000 book, The America We Deserve Trump wrote that he supports a ban on assault weapons and a slightly longer waiting period to buy a gun. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/donald-trump-believe-candidate-stands-10-issues/

Huh?: Donald Trump .. there should be a national right to carry concealed weapons across the US.
The only poll I found on this was Bloomberg's old MAIG, which found that 38% opposed national ccw, 35% supported, 28% not sure. As per republicans, 50% support, 25% oppose, 25% not sure. Since you will challenge the source I will just leave it, but Branford's claim that 'overwhelming majority of republican primary voters' support it, is suspect: http://prtl-sitea-maigs.nyc.gov/downloads/pdf/polling_slides_9-12.pdf

On this one Branford is demonstrably wrong, back-acewards, since every major reputable poll has overwhelming republican support for BG checks. I will give just one, another in my link has 86% repub support:
"Do you favor or oppose a federal law requiring background checks on all potential gun buyers?"

(4,462 posts)they are fools or really haven't been paying attention to the electorate.
Moreover, you can try to cherry-pick the data all you want, but gun rights and opposition to further gun control is clearly the national trend (and stronger in red and many important purple states), to say nothing of the obvious continuing legislative and judicial failures of gun control advocates.
As to national concealed carry reciprocity, I would also remind you that the recent relevant amendment actually received 57 votes in the Senate, while the accompanying background check bill only received 54 votes, all with a Democratically-controlled Senate. Would you care to guess what the vote would be today with a Republican-controlled Senate, no less the House with its largest Republican majority in generations? If in the frightening event we ever see a President Trump (or Cruz, Rubio, Bush, Jindal, Fiorina, Kasich, etc.), I hope you're prepared for concealed carry reciprocity, along with even more liberal national gun laws.

Nevertheless, I expect you and others to maintain your head in the sand approach to gun rights politics in the country because of the cognitive dissonance with your person views concerning firearms. As an inevitable result, gun rights will continue to liberalize and expand, and far more importantly, more Democratic candidates will walk off the political gun control cliff as Republicans win more elections, particularly in the South and Midwest and at the state and local levels, thereby jeopardizing the entirety of our Party's more liberal agenda.

(2,717 posts)Branford, sighing?: Sigh..., if anyone was surprised about Trumps "evolution" on guns during a Republican primary, they are fools or really haven't been paying attention to the electorate.
Utterly ridiculous remark, some of his more intelligent cohorts are, imo, undoubtedly surprised of his reversals.
And readers will note that by Branford's above admission, he contradicts what he said in a previous post: Branford: To the surprise of absolutely no one, Trump's position on guns has "evolved" to match that of a majority of Americans,
Branford: ... you can try to cherry-pick the data all you want, but gun rights and opposition to further gun control is clearly the national trend
I did not cherry pick data, I rebutted your false claims with polls regarding 2 of trump's revised gun control positions. IOW, it was your data to begin with.
Branford: As to national concealed carry reciprocity, I would also remind you that the recent relevant amendment actually received 57 votes in the Senate,
I'll also remind YOU that I don't give a whit about the unrepresentative senate because what I rebutted was you saying a majority of americans supported national ccw reciprocity: Branford: Trump's position on guns has "evolved" to match that of a majority of Americans, and more importantly for Trump now, an overwhelming majority of Republican primary voters.
Neither a majority of americans, nor even a simple majority of republicans supported nat ccw reciprocity in that poll.
And certainly not your inane contention about background checks:
{Trumps} gun policy, which also argues against expansions of background checks for gun owners and chimes with the campaign aims of NRA
"Do you favor or oppose a federal law requiring background checks on all potential gun buyers?"

Branford: .. gun rights and opposition to further gun control is clearly the national trend..
Branford miss the new pew?:
Pew. July 14-20, 2015. N=2,002 adults nationwide. "What do you think is more important -- to protect the right of Americans to own guns, or to control gun ownership?"
Protect right to own guns .... Control ownership ... Unsure/ Refused

I have a New York State CCW, and I am none of those things. New York City is another story. Trump has a CCW in that august metropolis, which has its own permit system and doesn't even recognize the CCW issued by the state of which it is a part.

(6,771 posts)No. Thst counts for nothing as far as NYC is concerned. The process is still long, difficult, expensive, and arbitrary. You can be denied without any reason given. Some people hire attorneys to help them through the process.
Trump has one. So do Howard Stern, Don Imus, Sean Hannity, Robert De Niro, and Harvey Keitel. I'm wondering if they had to go down to One Police Plaza for the personal interview or if they got that waived.
