The move, announced Monday, comes despite an ongoing lawsuit by a gun-rights group that challenges the city's right to implement the registry and a larger package of gun regulations proposed in April.
"This is how we wrote it, and we're proceeding as planned," spokesman Dan Ball said.
Cleveland aims to create a registry for gun offenders similar to that kept of sex offenders. Mayor Frank Jackson called for its creation as a solution to the city's gun violence, which he and police Chief Calvin Williams said is exacerbated by the ease with which convicted felons are able to obtain guns.

(484 posts)Will the cop who murdered him make the list?
I think that particular police murder of an innocent child occurred in Cleveland.

So no, not on the list.

(5,045 posts)if you are convicted of a felony gun crime you are already on various lists and that would appear when the NCIC check is run when an attempt to buy a firearm from a dealer.
Cleveland's move would be an unnecessary duplication of effort.

Then who's on the other end of the phone while I stand at the counter in the gun shop? I agree that some municipalities are remiss in timely reporting of data, but that's not the Feds' fault. The one thing I think they should do differently is pursue failed purchase attempts for the perjury committed on the 4473, but I don't see how Cleveland can do that unilaterally, as they don't have access to the data.
Is Cleveland going to have its own background checks performed at point of sale? If not, what is the point of this?
Just for the record, I'm not sold on the sex offender registry theory either. People who are still dangerous should still be incarcerated. Releasing them into the community with a sign on their backs not only violates the offenders' rights, but endangers the community as well.

(18,318 posts)Several years ago, a newspaper sought to reveal the names of lawful gun-owners for purposes of Salem-like moral condemnation and Shaming.
This appears to be more of the same, since it has the redolent whiff of sexually-based social policy. And many controllers are really into Penis©, Ammosexual©, and Gunhumping®.
A wild idea for controllers: Try and convict offenders of gun crimes, sentence them, and maintain your records accordingly. Drop your Scarlet Letter shame lists... Or expect some creative retribution along similar lines to come your way.
