Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumAnother thank you to the wonderful people here.
I have just been banned from a thread elsewhere on DU, and had a post hidden, both of which I consider unjustified. So the reason I'm posting here is to once again thank the genuinely wonderful people who hang out in this group. Those of you who recognize my name know that I frequently express the opinion that guns should be confiscated.
I am NOT here to promote that notion right now, but to express my sincere appreciation that even when I says stuff like that, I always get plenty of push back from the posters here, and I've only had the odd post hidden -- and not very many o9f them -- and never been banned from here.
You guys and gals are fabulous. We certainly have a fundamental difference of opinion, but you serve as a shining example of tolerating differences of opinions. Unlike some people here on DU.
Wish I could buy each and every one of you a beer, or a martini, or a coke, whatever you'd want.

(23,156 posts)some pretty serious debates and conflicts. And even though my stance is vastly different from that of most posters, you guys put up with me. I just want to let you all know that as much as we disagree, I appreciate that you've NEVER blocked me. A hidden post or two is no big deal. Being totally banned from a group is. I just love it that you will put up with people like me.
You guys are great.

(12,194 posts)As one of those whos had heated words with you on the gun topic, I'd like to say first, thank you for the thank you, and second, you're welcome.
This group is very grounded in debate and speaking freely, rather than censorship of perceived opinions.
I'll probably take a lot of shit for saying this (not that I care, it needs saying), but its a shame that such a state makes us here in this group noteworthy for it on DU.

(1,954 posts)Thanks for the props, Sheila. A special shoutout should go to our incredibly tolerant and patient host, Krispos, I think. Guy's rock solid when it comes to not letting his emotions or partisan politics rule his governance of the board.
Take care.

(2,620 posts)I was pleased to see that the shooting clientele was fairly diverse - a nice mix of various races (with a few ladies shooting as well).
And this, in a predominantly white neighborhood...

(6,185 posts)This "safe haven" group tends to be, if anything, pretty tolerant overall.
Kind of like people here believe in all those "amendment thingies", and enjoy the debate, instead of focusing on how to best silence any dissent, as some groups seem to as part oft heir SoP.
The only thing that rarely tips our genial host into stepping in with the "Big, Bad, Ban Hammer", is pointless and obscene name calling and outright personal attacks.
That's why, in all the time the Gungeon has been around, he's only seen fit to ban 3 people who repeatedly showed that they can't play well with others.
Good luck in the other groups.

(18,318 posts)This is a well-run Group, thanks to Krispos and the tolerant, but hard-reasoning folks who hang here.
You have made my day!

(18,318 posts)If you come, Radio Coffe & Beer has about 2 dozen craft brews on tap. Nice biergarten with families, big oaks, breezes, top-flight music (hey, this is Austin), and really good trailer food. The temp is high 60s, now, with blue skies. So, I'm off.....
You are so tempting me! And I'm in Santa Fe, not all that far away.
Someday, someday.

(18,318 posts)...is a great party scheduled for the last Saturday in April. Oldest celebration of counter culture in the U.S. (since 1963). Just a free party in the park. It serves as a quick Ellis Island for new arrivals to Austin. Real Ale and other (only) Texas beer sold -- over 250 kegs in an afternoon. Clothing optional for the 15-25,000 who come.
The hep young crowd think they are cool. Nah, it's the old hippies who show the way!

(23,156 posts)So I won't be out there in the summer, but maybe some day when it should be what I consider good weather.
I tend to like it cooler than most people.

(1,054 posts)on any post except the ones that are simply insults.
You have just as much right to express your opinion as I do.
When all someone has is insults, no substantive argument or information then to hell with them; {several folks here seem to be of the opinion that anyone who has, wants a gun or would use it in defense of property is morally contemptible, hell yes I'll hide that stupid shit}but someone who can make an argument based on facts and information instead of ad hominem should ALWAYS be allowed to say their piece, in ANY group or Forum.
I might (or might not) have a feeling that people who dislike, are scared of, or want to take firearms away are (insert insulting description here) but stating it I should expect that post to be hidden (Actually I don't; while I like and own guns and have zero problem with robbers, rapists and carjackers being dispatched like vermin, there damned well ARE places guns just shouldn't be and people who shouldn't have them, IMHO)
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)is such a sharp contrast to other parts of DU that you all deserve a thank you.
I know when I post here there's usually going to be a lot of disagreement, and I try not to post very often because I know we will not change each others' minds. But the amazing tolerance, even while vigorously defending your point of view, is just wonderful.

(470 posts)i posted something similar in the other group, and was banished for it.
