So whats going on in Chicago?
Its complicated, but a comparison with New York is a good place to start. Both cities began the 1990s with historically high homicide rates; both have diverse populations, including large numbers of blacks, Hispanics and whites, and a wide range of economic fortune as well.
People who know both cities say there are some significant differences in policing, especially around the issue of guns.

(2,493 posts)Sentences for illegal gun possession along with a massive increase in gang violence has led to an increase in murders, primarily by gang members. I would like to see these individuals held accountable for their actions. Commit a crime involving a firearm should be a mandatory 10 year sentence. Do you agree SecMo?

(17,502 posts)illegal pot possession. Besides, DAs generally drop those charges first.
what they are saying is that another wise law abiding citizen who made a wrong turn on a bridge would face greater time than a Nike Boys soldier. There is a valid point to be said about mala prohibita crimes, like simple gun possession, of getting stiffer sentences than "real" crimes. Prime example, in New York, any violation of the SAFE Act, including having an unregistered Olympic style target pistol deemed an "assault weapon" is a higher penalty than sexual assault.

Why doesn't Chicago concentrate on the gangs, who are the real problem? Easy answer.

(2,717 posts)dsicntnt: Chicago... the gun-control paradise has a murder problem involving guns???
News flash to dscntnt, the 2011 supreme court McDonald decision made handguns legal in chicago, have been for 5 years now. Some form of concealed carry legal too now, 2012. Read up more on gun control in chicago. Gun control paradise?
Guns continuing to do good work in chicago, eh? Since McDonald chicago's murder rate has averaged about 6% higher (average, gone up ~15% one year it seems.)
Chicago has a reputation for strict gun laws, and gun rights advocates often point to it as proof that gun regulation doesnt reduce violence. But its laws arent what they used to be: Federal courts struck down its ban on handgun ownership in 2010, and its ban on gun sales in 2014. And a New York Times analysis showed guns were easily available from nearby jurisdictions, especially Indiana.
To wit Gary Indiana which is pro gun & has oft in the past had the highest gun murder rate in the country.
August 04, 2015 GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- By this time last year, there had been 19 murders in Gary. This year, it's already up to 34. City officials said they can't turn around that trend by themselves.
(2013) Gary is on pace to log 49 homicides by year's end. If that happens, the city will have a per capita homicide rate of 62, or one for every 1,600 residents.
Murder rates in pro gun gary indiana have generally been higher than chicago's gun murder rates:

(18,577 posts)Chicago's problem is being caused by Gary. Perhaps they could sue. They might win... well maybe not but then they're used to losing.
So from what you're saying, Chicago's gun laws aren't working.
I guess we agree.

(2,717 posts)Note how chicago is tenth after 7 pro gun cities with shall issue (phila pro gun state with restrictions)An August 2013 CDC report looked at rates for gun homicides in the 50 most populous metropolitan areas. It found that for 2009-2010, the top gun murder rate areas were, in order: New Orleans, Memphis, Detroit, Birmingham, St. Louis, Baltimore, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Philadelphia and Chicago
Looka all the pro gun states at the top of the lists: states with the highest {robbery} rates are Nevada, Mississippi, Georgia, Maryland and Louisiana. Four out of five of those states received an F from the groups that advocate tougher gun laws. (We discounted Illinois, which reported limited data to the FBI.)
We then did the same rate calculation for aggravated assaults with a firearm in 2014. The top five states: Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, Louisiana and Delaware. http://www.factcheck.org/2015/10/gun-laws-deaths-and-crimes/
