‘Under the Gun’ Director Refuses to Apologize to ‘Radical’ Group

While Katie Couric finally expressed some regret for a deceptive edit in her anti-gun documentary, the director of “Under the Gun” remains defiant.

On Wednesday, Stephanie Soechtig told Variety magazine that “had I known that the NRA would focus on eight seconds of a two-hour film, I might have done things differently. But I made the creative decision and I stand by it.”

Soechtig also revealed her true anti-gun rights agenda when she huffed: “If I wanted to make them [Virginia Citizens Defense League] look bad, I would have focused exclusively on their radical ideology. But I didn’t do that.” Later in the interview, Soechtig added: “It’s interesting that they’re focusing on what’s not in the film instead of what is in the film, because if they focused on what is in the film, it would threaten their livelihood. This is very textbook gun-lobby intimidation tactics, and I won’t be intimidated....There is a small but noisy fringe in this country. They’ve been really loud, and to be honest they’ve been really successful in preventing our legislators from passing any meaningful legislation on this issue.”

On her now infamous “creative decision” to misrepresent the VCDL members’ response, Soechtig explained: “The terror watch list is a real pivotal feature in the film, as is the whole notion of background checks. So this felt like a really crucial time to stop down and allow the audience a moment to let that question sink in.” She added that a documentary “has a different standard than the nightly news has. When you’re making a film like this, the goal is to get people to come to theaters to watch your film. You have to provide a thematic experience for them. I don’t think we misconstrued any of the facts.”

That would have meant including the answer the group gave to the question. She edited out their entire answer.

That this ever was intended to be a "fair and balanced" documentary.

I notice you have not yet responded to my direct question to you about the apparently felonious gun purchases made by the filmmakers. http://www.democraticunderground.com/1172194902#post3
I assume it is simply an oversight at this time.

A trend that people on the control side are much better at asking questions then answering them. More accurately, they demand answers will never giving any in return.

The willingness to point the finger of guilt at millions of gun owners who have never committed a crime while ignoring felonious activities by fellow control advocates simply illustrates the hypocrisy and moral bankruptcy of the movement.

Misrepresentation is a primary tool of anti-gunners.

Soechtig also revealed her true anti-gun rights agenda when she huffed: “If I wanted to make them look bad, I would have focused exclusively on their radical ideology. But I didn’t do that.”

If she could have done that, she would have done that. This is a misrepresentation of the facts, just like her 'film' is.

Again?

The things I miss, I tell you...The newly returned mouthpiece has disappeared from bansalot again, presumably fuming over the two hides he received in his own group. Wont it be fun when there are actually rules that have to be followed around here, for a change? Maybe we should start a pool of who runs most afoul of them once they are enacted...anyway...

Maybe someone can explain:

Why is it that the pro-lots-more-gun-control people seem to always be the ones that also suffer from micromanagerial style general control issues, themselves?

It seems to me, that the venn diagram would look something like this:

Since you are the one championing this film and its editor, for the sake of reasonableness you should also be willing to discuss and defend HERE in GC&RKBA. Your unwillingness to do so shows that you are nothing more than Spamsalot from Bansalot.

It's chickenshit, and yeah, I'm calling you out.

Funny how it is worthy to post because you *think* it makes pro-rkba look bad, yet you cannot muster up the gumption to defend it. Maybe you can get a job working for Ms. Couric.

That the media is lying in order to try to shape public opinion and you cannot seem to find anything wrong with that is an interesting position for a....Democrat.

"California Attorney General Kamala Harris, a candidate actively campaigning for the Senate seat that is opening up with Barbara Boxer’s retirement, recently made the news when she tried to shame members of Congress for refusing to enact unconstitutional and counterproductive gun-control laws. “They should have closed the chambers of Congress on the House and the Senate side, and said all you members go in there, only you, and spread out the autopsy photographs of and them to look at those photographs. And then vote your conscience,” Harris said at Politicon, a political convention held in Los Angeles.1

Wow! That’s some pretty extreme rhetoric. But is the pot calling the kettle black here? Harris is the highest level law enforcement officer in California, and the head of the Department of Justice (DOJ). DOJ is responsible for maintaining criminal records, mental illness records, records of those who have become ineligible to possess firearms, and all of the databases used to perform background checks on gun buyers, to register firearms, and to take firearms away from people who are prohibited from possessing them but who still have firearms registered in their name.

Those records, and the related databases, are a hot mess."
