Record Gun Sales Continue Through May

Record Gun Sales Continue Through May

Thirteen straight months of gun sales records

BY: Stephen Gutowski

June 6, 2016 1:10 pm

The month of May saw yet another gun-related background check record making it the 13th month to see an all time high.

The FBI completed a record 1,870,000 checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, this May, according to an agency report. That’s almost 300,000 more checks than May of 2015, which set a record at the time.

It is also nearly a million more checks than May 2008.

May was also the first month in 2016 that did not break two million checks as the gun industry enters a seasonal lull in sales. The numbers remain on pace to set another yearly record, however.

It must be the same 20 million or so people buying guns over and over, right?

1. More guns and fewer jobs, this is not a good combination

Meanwhile, there was a shootout a few blocks away from me yesterday and I missed driving through the crossfire by about half an hour.

I'm sick of this shit. Something has to be done to make gun ownership less attractive to morons.

2. I'll just take a wild ass guess that the shooters near you didn't get NICS checks last month.

How about as a start, making the 10 years sentence for an illegal gun buy or use in a felony a sentencing minimum?

No plea bargains on gun charges, no time off for good behavior or signing up for a drug treatment program?

If they had, Hadiya Pendleton would be alive today and so would a lot of other people here in Chicago.

One guy dropped his gun on the street. He's not likely to get it back, so that's progress, I guess.

8. This chart is interesting...highly repeatable annual cycle, and the constant trend upwards over-all

Also curious that "300million estimated guns in the US" has been quoted for so long now, yet there are over 100 million background checks the last 5 years alone.
