A man arrested in Southern California with three assault rifles who told police he was headed to a gay pride event had earlier been ordered by a judge in his home state of Indiana to give up all his guns.
But authorities there said Monday that they didn't make any surprise checks on James Wesley Howell to confirm he was following the probation requirement.
Howell has a California court appearance tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, but it wasn't yet clear what charges he'll face, if any.
He was arrested early Sunday in Santa Monica with the weapons and explosives in a car he apparently drove from Indiana. He told police he was headed to a gay pride event in West Hollywood that attracts hundreds of thousands of people.

(26,795 posts)Was he to dispose of his guns via the honor system? Certainly fuels the argument that the laws we have should be enforced before we pass new laws.

(594 posts)The authorities had plenty of legal means at their disposal, but FAILED to make use of them.
Stupid grabbers think yet more laws will do the trick when the current laws are poorly enforced.

(4,590 posts)Law Abiding Bob might have went to the gun store to buy a gun. Not today. Thanks to the NRA Law Abiding Bob is now convinced a background check=registration, your name is on a list that anyone can use to confiscate your weapons at any time.
Today a much larger percentage of gun sales are done in a parking lot, out of a trunk and a lot of those sales were set up using social media.
The lid has been blow off Pandoras box and new laws are not going to put an end to it.

(6,185 posts)I'm guessin' that you don't actually have any proof of that "surge in illegal sales" from a reliable, neutral source like the DoJ or FBI?
You just heard it somewhere or it's a kinda "well everybody just knows" thing?
let me pull evidence of gun running right out of my ass here. You want evidence, come to a gun show in Tulsa, we are famous for them in case you haven't heard. You can view for yourself the amount of guns being sold in the parking lot vs from a vendor.
From your response it would seem you think I am a gun grabber. Guess again. I own guns. LEGALLY. My guess is you do too, but you thought you were going to call out someone on the opposite side. Get real. Either you are clueless about gun culture or you know about, but choose to ignore the problem with illegal sales.

(6,185 posts)... of course they could be lying, but the troopers said have had exactly one incident in over 20 years of a parking lot sale and it was a guy that didn't want to wait the 24 hours for the Marlin Model 60 he'd bought.
Both seller and buyers were arrested in the parking lot, cuffed and hauled away.
Maybe people in Illinois are just more law abiding than the criminals in Oklahoma or sneakier?

I understand that of course, but haven't thought about it much in that way.
