VERY good question.

Sounds like a great idea to me.

I just discovered projectchildsafe.org, myself. I hope various kinds of gun-curbings or gun-mitigation become trends.

children who had been through programs that taught them exactly to do that. When they tested them, they found that the children, almost without exception picked up and handled the 'gun' used for the testing. Seems that teaching them to do that doesn't overcome youthful curiosty. Unfortunately.

Here's a link about that experiment:

It is the ones that don't that make the news. Remember there are 80-100 million firearms owners out there.

who do not secure their guns when their guns are involved in negligent homicides. Can't secure your gun, and your kid blows his (or a friend's) head off, then off to prison with you.

the the story certainly is not. Granted, NBC is the leader in faking stories the other three aren't too far behind. This one used statistics that counted teens shot in gang battles as the same as a little kid picking up parent's gun. The actual number of that is about 50. That was either incompetent or dishonest reporting, take your pick. The fact that used misleading statistics, I say dishonest.
That said, I'm skeptical of any abstinence only based "education". Just telling kids not to do something without a better explanation than "because I said so" doesn't cut it. My firearms safety training started with a demonstration of what a .357 will do to a watermelon.

There was always a .22 rifle next to the kitchen door, and a .45 M1911 Colt on the fireplace mantle. My father took me and my younger sister out to the backyard with the rifle, set up some tin cans and taught us safe handling and operation and basic marksmanship. Then he obliterated an apple with one of those little .22 cartridges to show us how much power was in that small round.

We were told in no uncertain terms that we were never to touch these items unless it was handed to us by an adult. We went through a box of shells, learned gun safety, and had a wonderful time. And none of us kids ever laid an errant hand on those guns.
