U.S. Republicans push back on Democratic gun-control efforts
WASHINGTON | BY DAVID MORGAN AND SUSAN CORNWELL
U.S. congressional Republican leaders on Tuesday resisted Democratic demands for a vote on gun-control measures and warned that some could face punishment for an unusual sit-in last month that tied up the House of Representatives for 25 hours.
With Democrats already rejecting a Republican gun bill and warning of possible further protests, the House appeared to be heading for renewed discord over gun restrictions in the aftermath of the June 12 mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in which 49 people were gunned down.
Hours before he was due to discuss gun legislation with two Democratic lawmakers who led the sit-in, House Speaker Paul Ryan said he believed their proposals would violate the U.S. Constitution and warned that he would not "incentivize" more disruptive behavior.
"The last thing we are going to do is surrender the floor over to these kinds of tactics when we know it's going to compromise the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens," Ryan said in an interview with radio station WTMJ in Milwaukee.

(21,000 posts)No one really cares about the victims. It is all about trying to score points with their voters.
I can understand the objection to the three-day period however I have never seen any proposal other the three days besides Feinstein's 'American citizens have to prove their innocence.'
How long should the government be allowed to gather the evidence, which they should already have, showing that you are a danger and need to be restricted from firearms purchases? Or are we just going to abandon the presumption of innocence and turn the entire system on its head?

(36,700 posts)shot about 150 rounds and didn't need any 30 round or 100 round magazine. Every time a Democrat gets elected president
the gun industry lobby (NRA) pushes this stuff about Democrats are going to take your guns. The last 8 years nobody took my guns
interfered in any way with me buying a gun or ammo. The only thing over the last 8 years that has caused any problems is the NRA itself by scaring a bunch of half wits into buying up all the ammo creating a shortage of certain calibers.

(470 posts)let me guess, its a tubular magazine that holds anywhere between 15 and 20 rounds. so your rifle can hold more rounds and be reloaded faster than a CA compliant ar15. the ar15 shoots a .223 round, which is basically a glorified .22. what makes your rifle any safer than mine? why does mine require more restrictions?
doc03
(36,700 posts)murder or a sniper would use. A .223 has nothing in common with a .22 LR other than the diameter of the bullet. I really don't know off hand how many rounds it holds. I was sighting in a different scope I loaded up 5 rounds at a time shot a group and made adjustments.
A .223 is basically a glorified .22. I don't think so!
Ballistics of a .22 LR HP velocity at (50 yards) 1061 feet per second energy 89 foot pounds
Ballistics of a .223 velocity at (500 yards) 1640 feet per second energy 330 foot pounds
The .223 has 370% more energy at 500 yards than a .22 LR.

(16,974 posts)Are not commonly used for murder by firearm and you know that. So your rifle holds 19 rounds. High capacity killing machine, right?
doc03
(36,700 posts)a .22 LR is absolutely no comparison to a .223. Give me an example of someone using a lever action .22 LR and killing
50 people? Like the ballistics charts says a .223 has 370% more energy at 500 yards than a .22LR has at 50 yards. A .223 has a bullet drop of about 11 inches at 500 yards and a .22 LR has a bullet drop of 41.6 feet at 500 yards. It is possible to kill a human at 1/2 the length of a football field with a .22 LR but a .223 can easily kill at 1/4 mile.

(470 posts)not sure about lever actions, but these firearms were used to kill 16 people and injure 49. (m1 carbine, 12 gauge shotgun, and a Remington 700 bolt action 6mm rifle.)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Whitman
this bolt action (Italian Carcano M91/38) rifle was used to assassinate the great JFK. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_John_F._Kennedy
this pump action (Remington Model 760 chambered in 30-06) was used to assassinate DR. King
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Martin_Luther_King,_Jr.
this item (plastic container of gasoline) was used to kill 87 people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Land_fire
this item (a Ryder rental truck full of ammonium nitrate) killed 168 people, and injured 680. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_bombing
any tool in the wrong hands can cause pain and destruction. we don't need to limit the type of weapons owned but rather who can own them. we have UBCs in CA and i support making it a federal law.

(6,185 posts)If that's the case, take a look at this week's news in California, New York, Connecticut, Cook County and other states and cities where they are trying to ban rifles, based on their magazines or cosmetics.
The only reason they haven't succeeded to any degree is because gun control is a joke. No infrastructure, no grass roots (whining online doesn't really count) with a handful of lazy, cheap, so called supporters.
The only reason you aren't limited to 7 rounds in your .22 tube, getting a background check for ammo and paying a 5 cent surtax per round for your box of .22LR, is because somebody else is doing all the work, so you can pat yourself on the back and feel smug for being "Reasonable".

Staggering just how some folks simply don't understand the true nature of the Gun Control movement. They give hints of it, cause they cause every little victory that they get is a "good first step"..

(36,700 posts)from my brother when he passed away. I looked it up and it holds 19 .22 LR rounds but I have never loaded more than 10 in it.
It is a .22 LR not a gun a mass murderer would use. Contrary to a previous post a AR-15 .223 is not a glorified .22 LR. I looked up the ballistics.
A .22 LR has a velocity of 1061 feet per second at (50 yards) and 89 foot pounds energy.
A .223 has a velocity of 1640 feet per second at (500 yards) and 330 foot pounds energy.
The .223 has 370% more energy at (500 yards) than a .22 LR has at (50 yards). that is far from a glorified .22 LR.

(5,046 posts)When you compare it too common deer hunting rifles.. Like the 30-06..
30-06 Springfield, Barnes TTSX Bullet 168grn, with 3,356 Energy at 100 yards, muzzle velocity of 3000 fps ..
I will not bother you with some of the magnum caliber rifles that many folks use to hunt with....Actually I will..
300 Winchester Magnum with 200grn Nosler Accubond bullets ,3,735 energy at 100 yards, 2900 fps Muzzle velocity
Yep, the .223 "IS" a glorified .22, and is illegal to deer hunt with in many states due to it's poor energy rating.
330 vs 3,356 ... seems like the venerable 30-06 is more than 10x more powerful than the lowly .223 Those numbers are not anywhere in the same ballpark.
doc03
(36,700 posts)and they both go bang. I won't waste my time explaining that again. When was the last time a civilian killed 50 6 year olds
or anyone else with a bolt action 30-06 rifle. Hell I can compare a 105 MM tank round to a 30-06 Springfield what is the point.
Thank god the NRA doesn't want a terrorist buying one of those yet.
