2. What are they supposed to say?

The investigation is just beginning and the only thing is known is the media created narrative, which is usually wrong. Not saying it is or isn't in this case, just saying that saying anything without the facts is simply virtue signaling.

Meaning like a couple days delay. I don't think they spoke out against Erik Scott's killing for quite a while either (another apparent case of a licensed CCW holder trying to obey contradictory commands and getting shot for it), and he was white.

Colion Noir spoke out immediately on his blog, but not on an NRA letterhead.

I do know that it was the NRA and the ACLU that got guns returned to black residents of NOLA after they were illegally confiscated during Katrina, and they also went to court to block gun bans on public housing residents, so they have stood up for the gun rights of African-Americans in the past. I do agree that there was a perception of foot-dragging on this, though, and I suspect there is some internal tension between defending the officer and defending the CCW-licensed gun owner.

Shaneen Allen, race and gun control
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2014/07/22/shaneen-allen-race-and-gun-control/

i first heard about Shaneen Allen from the NRA, i believe they helped with some of her legal fees.

New Jersey’s NAACP leadership expressed concern about how Allen’s case was being handled but didn’t take an active role in promoting her case or providing legal support. Allen would have had to fill out an authorization form with the civil rights organization, leaders say, for them to get involved in her defense. “You have to go through the proper protocol,” said Melvin Warren, the criminal justice chair for the New Jersey NAACP.
