The past few weeks are making me rethink my stand on guns and the Second Amendment.

My wife is a person of color and my son is a mixed-race American. And right here in safe, blue San Francisco, a Latino woman was verbally and physically assaulted by a Trump-lover at Crissy Field. Someone attacked a woman in San Jose and ripped her hijab off in a deserted parking lot. These incidents happened in the deepest-blue parts of a blue state and I don't need to go into what's happened elsewhere. If we are not going to have a president or Justice Department that will not have our backs, it may be time to get our own backs and do something I swore I would never do. And that is to arm myself.

She lives and goes to College in St. Augustine, Florida. While walking down the street was harassed by some young men saying she should go back to where she came from. She Is 65% native American, Turkish, a little Irish, She is more American than they are. This country is going nuts. I fear one day she may be assaulted. I gave her some big sunglasses and a wide brim hat just so she could walk around and have some peace until this blows over. She really looks more like a movie star now with the glasses and hat. I do not know how to fight this.

You need a LOT of money to get a CCP there. Only the very rich, or politically connected can get one. Everybody else is screwed.

Giving up rights isn't progressive.

Safety first and carry on. The idea that 911 is an personal safety plan has always been dumb, only you can protect yourself when the time comes.

If you decide to buy a gun, you as a CA resident are going to find out why we care so deeply about protecting our 2A rights.

With that said, I generally enjoy your posts and hope that you stick around. We need more people in Cali and elsewhere that will help stand up for gun rights.

I suggest doing some investigating. Talk with someone familiar with you state and local laws.

Owning for self-defense is serious matter. I completely support the right to do so but I view it as a major responsibility that isn't for everyone.

Best of luck.

oh, and of course you think this.

i mean you say you're pro-union, but you criticize the SF public school teachers for threatening to strike.

and BART workers for striking and you think MUNI drivers are paid too much.

i mean, you're probably a liberal, except when we dive into the details you oppose most liberal things.

so thinking that you're safer carrying a gun around?

is anyone surprised that you think this? probably some, but not me, i pay attention to things people say.

My fellow "progressives" won't put it together though.

Realistic and in depth training and practice.

The gun is not there to reassure you, to empower you or make you safe. It is there to kill someone when you shoot them.
Be sure you can comprehend and accept that fact, and then, and only then begin your training and search for weapon for home and self defense.
Factor in a good safe, and regular training into your figures as well.

In a stadium full of people, it might be worthwhile to try for a home run, and tell the fuckwad to go to the nether reaches. Taking stands must at times be public.

to avoid conflict, if possible. Get some training, learn how to hit your target and shoot a box or two of ammo at least once a month. Be prepared to be around people with other points of view at the range.

You might start with reading the book In The Gravest Extreme by Massad Ayoob.

Be sure you get some quality training on firearm safety and see if you can find a way for your family to get some experience on the range with a number of firearms so you have some idea of which to chose. Gun owners who are range members are quite often very helpful and actually enjoy introducing others to the shooting sports. In many cases you may be surprised that a white range member is not racist in the least and would see no problem with helping your wife and son.

I remember many years ago I took a black co-worker to the range to show him what shooting a handgun was like. When we left I asked him what his opinion was. He told me that thing that impressed him the most was just how friendly the range master and the other shooters were and how well he had been treated. He joined the range and one day decided to take a concealed weapons course with a really good instructor who spent considerable range time before he would pass an individual and fired at targets placed at 75 feet to arms length. The instructor was so impressed that he tried to get my co-worker to get interested in competitive shooting events.

Unfortunately it sounds like you live in city where it may prove difficult if not impossible to obtain a concealed carry permit for a firearm as it is a "may issue" state.

California is a "may issue" state for permits to carry concealed guns. The willingness of issuing authorities in California ranges from No Issue in most urban areas to Shall Issue in rural counties. Additionally, the issuing authority can also impose restrictions on the CCW permit-holder, such as limiting concealed carry only to the purposes listed on the approved CCW permit application. However, concealed carry permits are valid statewide, regardless of where they were issued. This creates a situation where residents in presumptively No Issue locations such as Los Angeles and San Francisco cannot lawfully carry a concealed firearm, but residents from other counties with more permissive CCW issuance policies can lawfully carry within these same jurisdictions. California does not recognize concealed carry permits issued by other states, and non-residents are generally forbidden from obtaining a California concealed carry permit.

The solution to that problem sounds fairly simply. Just get "shall issue" concealed carry passed in the state. The chances of that happening anytime in the near future is like my winning the LOTTO this week if I buy just one ticket.

randy: right here in safe, blue San Francisco, a Latino woman was verbally and physically assaulted by a Trump-lover at Crissy Field. Someone attacked a woman in San Jose and ripped her hijab off in a deserted parking lot. These incidents happened in the deepest-blue parts of a blue state

Simple assaults never happened in San Fran prior to this? Dirty Harry a myth? or you living in a vacuum.
So what you think, you'd a shot these guys, Dirty Randy? shot someone for taking someone's cover off?
You think it's so simple that if you have a gun on you, you're gonna be safer, and not cause more problems than you would ever want?
You have kids? who might find your gun when you set it aside & misplace or forget it sometimes?
You might drop your gun in public, making a gunass of yourself at the least, sending people scattering to accidental discharge (both from your gun & in your pants as you realize what just happened). Then it's YOU needing to explain yourself to the cops.
Most ccw holders do not get involved in other people's altercations, since the circumstances are not plain to see - who is the bad guy & who is the good guy, and legal ramifications make it stupid to do so.

If we are not going to have a president or Justice Department that will not have our backs, it may be time to get our own backs and do something I swore I would never do. And that is to arm myself.

Specious. Get some pepperspray, should be good enough in san francisco. And much safer than a gun.
