Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumI just came back from a Lowe's in Durham, NC, near where a lot of shootings
have been happening recently.
Most of the seasonal display section has been filled with merchandise for Christmas: lights, fake trees, outdoor extension cords, tree decorations...you know the drill. But what stopped me cold was a display between the two sets of sliding exit doors: huge gun safes. Big ones designed to hold multiple weapons of all sizes.
Has anybody else seen huge gun safes being marketed to every customer who walks out the door of a big box store?
This one holds 32 long guns, 6 hand guns, and runs over $1600.

(534 posts)Like my husband keeps their home defense tools in the safe. Good ones cost 3,000-4,000.

(92,665 posts)In rumpwerld have them out, front and center. I will never own enough guns for a huge piece of furniture like that. I do, however, have a locking, metal travel case for the two I do have. Responsible gun owners keep their guns locked in a SAFE place.

(32,059 posts)Prime marketing space in the store is devoted to something that obviously isn't going to get up and walk out the door by itself but to something I would think that wouldn't appeal to many customers.
My husband owned a shotgun he used for hunting. And then to kill himself. But he only needed one.
I've lived in the Triangle area of NC for 21 years and I've never seen gun safes displayed like this before today.

(92,665 posts)I am sorry to hear that your husband went that way. I was unaware of this.
I am sorry to her this. My elder sibling killed herself about six years ago, but not with a gun. It's a horrible thing to have a loved one decide to go that way, my belated condolences.
When I read the post, it appeared to be more like a complaint, I guess I read it wrong, my apologies!

(20,984 posts)Is there is significant overlap between the average Lowe's customer and the typical hunter who likely owns several firearms. It is hunting season so the hunters are thinking of their guns and may want to upgrade their security. Especially if there have been shootings in the news.
A sale of such a safe is a triple win. Lowe's sells an expensive item, the gun owner has good security for their guns and the community it a little bit safer because the guns are in a safe instead of a closet.

(511 posts)Not only will this safe help protect the property of whoever purchases it, but it will also provide some protection to your community from low-life thieves who steal firearms and sell them on the street. Nothing is absolute, a determined thief with enough time and the proper tools can breach any security system, but this type of safe will deter the amateur and semi-pros from obtaining firearms. Another plus is that other valuables can be stored in this safe. It should serve the purchaser and their community well.

(2,520 posts)Store records and flash drives. Highly fire resistant and a decent cost. Too heavy to steal.
