Mass shootings: America's challenge for gun control

Firearms deaths are a fixture in American life.

There were 1.5 million of them between 1968 and 2017 - that's higher than the number of soldiers killed in every US conflict since the American War for Independence in 1775.

In 2020 alone, more than 45,000 Americans died at the end of a barrel of a gun, whether by homicide or suicide, more than any other year on record. The figure represents a 25% increase from five years prior, and a 43% increase from 2010.

snip

How do US gun killings compare with other countries?
In 2020, 43% of the deaths - amounting to 19,384 people - were homicides, according to data from the CDC. The figure represents a 34% increase from 2019, and a 75% increase over the course of the previous decade.

Nearly 53 people are killed each day by a firearm in the US, according to the data.

The data also shows that the vast majority of murders, 79%, were carried out with guns.

That's a significantly larger proportion of homicides than is the case in Canada, Australia, England and Wales, and many other countries.

After yet another mass shooting, damn. I don't have the words for it at the moment other than tragic. Epidemic comes to mind too. Enough!

Women? Maybe. I don't know of any mass killings by women but I don't know everything.
Seems like most killers are men.

So... maybe men could be excluded from owning or using a gun? That would cut down on mass shootings. A lot of people would still be alive today if men had been excluded from owning a gun. Seems guns and men are a bad combination.

Lies, racism, anti-Semitism, money and guns keep the Maga-Publicans afloat. Every American mass shooting leads back to them.

You can right click on it and "save image link", paste it in a notepad and use it where you see fit.

He did it under the guise that less than .5 percent of all gun crimes were being committed by assault weapons. No Shit Sherlock! They were Banned till the imbecile lifted the ban?????
Now it's been almost 20 years and Pandora's box has been open and Im pretty sure America is permanently fucked.
With smart marketing and NRA backing America's gun manufacturers have produced millions of these weapons of death and they aren't going away even if somehow a national ban on them were even possible.
I'm an older guy but if I was a young man starting out wanting to raise a family today I certainly wouldn't do it here. I've tested negative for nationalism decades ago.

My understanding is the sunset clause was required for it to pass back in 1994. Bush claimed he would sign a renewal, but he did so knowing there was zero chance of it ever making it to his desk.

the Congress failed to re up it, it never made it to GWB's desk, he said if it made it to him, he would sign it into law.

But clearly there is no will to do it.

The US is a country which won the war for independence against all odds.
Won WWII against all odds.
Put a man on the moon.

But we can't stop madmen from murdering 6 year olds in their classrooms?

Sure.
