Major Minnesota gun control legislation nearing Capitol finish line

Minnesota Democrats are on the verge of getting major gun control legislation passed into law. A red flag law and universal background checks on gun sales passed through the conference committee last Wednesday night.

Gun control has been a priority for top Democrats at the Capitol for years, and they now believe they’ve done it just right to keep their side unified and get it through to the governor.

As the clock passed 10 p.m. on Wednesday, a DFL-led committee approved a massive bill, including significant new regulations on guns.

"This is a transformative milestone that we are going to be bringing to our respective bodies for passage," said St. Sen. Ron Latz, DFL-St. Louis Park.

While the usual suspects oppose this bill, there are many of us gun owners who have been supporting these for years.

Update- signed by Governor Walz today, May 19th.

As long as the universal background checks create an intentional bottleneck in the process, it will withstand the inevitable Constitutional challenge.

Every red flag law I have looked at come extremely extremely close to stripping a person's 4th Amendment protections.

I thought that the reason for them was to do a background on personal sales, not just slow down the whole process. A right delayed, especially for no good reason, is a right denied. And I hope they have a good, tight rein on the red flags, as they have been abused in other areas.

The purpose of UBC's is to create a defacto registry. To have a paper trail from retail until interaction. A line of 4473's back to the beginning.
