(14,559 posts)On the next day 15 people were killed and 17 injured by guns. No, they weren't committing crimes.
32 to 1. Wow, I'm impressed-not.
Having a gun increases the risk of injury or death from gunshot 3 fold.

(2,317 posts)And something like 23 other states.

(14,559 posts)Yay guns!
BTW, Year to date 569 definsive gun uses, 8,819 homicides and accidental shootings of which 471 were children under 11.
Yay guns!
TexasDem69
(2,317 posts)Something like 1776. You shouldnt just make up stuff. Where are your stats from? Im going to stick with the Democratic Party platform of private gun ownership is protected by the Constitution. But you can deviate from that position if you want.
AndyS
(14,559 posts)You may continue with your magic thinking but I'll stick with data, math, science and shit.
Besides, if Vermont has always been no-permit how can anyone calculate the increase after it made the change??
AndyS
(14,559 posts)being able to carry with no permit, training or BG check? Argumentum extrimis much? Naaa, just projecting again . . .
TexasDem69
(2,317 posts)State it plainly. Ill provide three options, but please provide your own if you have different ideas. Do you (1) want to ban US citizens from owning any firearms (2) want to ban US citizens from owning any semiautomatic firearms or (3) allow US citizens to own any firearm subject to licensing requirements (and if this, then what are those requirements).
Heres your chance to set me straight and tell me plainly what you propose.
And bonus points if you tell me how its consistent with the party platform that you ignored earlier.
may data source for increases in crime/homicide: John H. Donohue, Abhay Aneja, and Kyle D. Weber, Right-to-carry Laws and Violent Crime: A Comprehensive Assessment Using Panel Data and a State-level Synthetic Control Analysis, Journal of Empirical Legal Studies 16, no. 2 (2019): 198247.
My goal is to reduce pointless deaths by the irresponsible use of guns. Period.
That has nothing to do with all the things you ascribe to me and project on to me.
Now what is your goal? What is the point in you posting a one time happy tale about how great guns are when all measurable data point to the opposite?
You don't know me, don't pretend you do and stop telling me what I think and propose.
TexasDem69
(2,317 posts)Whats your policy proposal? I gave you one of three options and you didnt respond to those or offer a different proposal but instead engaged again in personal attacks. How do you propose that we reduce irresponsible use of guns (your words)? And in a way consistent with the party policy? Every time you stalk one of my posts you end up accusing me of projection, and every time its simply me asking you to defend your position. So whats your position? Is it a ban, a ban with caveats, something different?
AndyS
(14,559 posts)None of what you think I think is even close to real.
Let me introduce myself. I learned marksmanship at 12 on family farm in S TX. The family's arsenal included the usual hunting rifles along with some more exotic things. The Army qualified me on the M14, M16 and field qualified me on the 1911 and M60. I'm also qualified on two tear gas dispensers, one backpack and one vehicle mounted. I was certified chemical/biological. Had a short stint as a 'sharpshooter' in a riot control company. My FFL (C&R) expired after I bought all the surplus rifles and pistols I wanted. I've participated in RKBA discussion for the better part of 40 years mostly on an academic level. Then December 14, 2012 happened with my grand daughter in my lap. That shifted the conversation from high school debate to real world. That made me reevaluate my relationship to guns. I destroyed a few and narrowed my collection to genuine collectors items. I have not fired one of them in about 7 years but am confident that I can make a 3 inch group at 100 yards with my 6.5 Swiss iron sights. Muscle memory and breath control.
There are too many guns in too many hands and they are too easy to get. I believe that to reduce the carnage, about 150,000 casualties a year, that has to change.
That's me. Who are you?
TexasDem69
(2,317 posts)I really do. And I agree that there are too many people with no business to have a gun who have access to a gun. So how do we solve that problem?
And to be clear, Im on DU because I support progressive policies, I just disagree with your idea of what that looks like on this issue.
AndyS
(14,559 posts)And you're still not answering questions.
TexasDem69
(2,317 posts)About how you think we make changes. Do you have any policy proposals on this issue?
AndyS
(14,559 posts)You clearly already know what my policy thoughts are. Otherwise how could you disagree?
I told you who I am. Who are you?
TexasDem69
(2,317 posts)This isnt going anywhere because you still refuse to offer any policy proposal at all. Hope you have a great weekend and 4th of July.
All the best

Chicago usually has a higher murder rate than houston, ~35% higher, and of course is the most severe violent crime, but murder is only about 2% of a cities total violent crime. Warmer weather tends to enhance crime rates.
Chicago & Houston have similar populations between about 2 & 2.5 millions, similar demographics, sorta sister port cities. Chicago is cold in winter, houston generally not.
2022 Compare Crime Rates: Chicago, IL vs Houston, TX
.............................Chicago, IL Houston, TX United States
violent crime rate ......49.9 ......... 50.4 ...... 22.7
property crime rate ...46.3 ........ 63.2 ...... 35.4
Guns doing great work in houston, eh? Chicago gets dgu's too (defensive gun uses)
.. violent crime & murder rate parity with chicago, but houston has 40% higher property crime.
Since both together constitute 'total crime rate', houston has a higher total crime rate than chicago.
Houston, Texas had the highest robbery rate [2022, Cities >500k, safehome link]
Houston has had higher total crime rates than chicago for the past decade, as well as most all those years for violent crime rates.
When will the right start harping on Houston for having such high violent crime rates & total crime rates?
Yes, Houston votes democratic, ~55% to 45% for Hillary (as Dallas & most all major cities), but Texas gun laws generally apply.

Sep 2021, Texas passed a new law that allows residents who are 21 or older and meet certain requirements to carry handguns without a license or training.. known as Constitutional Carry, took effect Sep 2021
... permitless concealed carry and open carry is legal for anyone at least 21 who may lawfully possess a handgun.
Can I open carry in downtown Houston?
June, 2021 (known as the Firearm Carry Act) .. 21 and older, who can legally possess a firearm, are able to carry a handgun concealed, or openly in a holster in non-prohibited public places.
Texas has a stand your ground law ... Texas has no law restricting sales or purchases of multiple firearms.
A person of any age may possess a firearm such as at a firing range. Texas has no laws regarding possession of any firearm regardless of age.
Texas does not maintain a registry of firearms. The federal govt also does not maintain a general registry..
Are ak47 legal in Texas? Texas has no law restricting assault weapons
