(2,317 posts)For this data point? The story actually says teens and children, but then says older adolescents aged 15-19 made up 82% of the deaths. 18+ isnt considered a child in any US jurisdiction, nor is 15+ in many jurisdictions.

(14,559 posts)If you want more than NBC offers they inclused a lnk directly to the CDC study. There is another link one post up from yours with a confirming link to the CDC study.
I have a question for you; what is the point of your post in this thread?

(2,317 posts)A data point with no other context or commentary.

(14,559 posts)There was a confirmation link from another DUer in the thread just above your post.
I'm curious why you comment on these posts without any context of your own.
Yes, you said over 18 isn't a child but if you took the time to look at the context you'd see that the age cut off was 19, as in 19th birthday as in under 19. You commented on other jurisdictions that see younger ages as adult but gave no context. What jurisdictions? Is it a blanket age limit or is it contingent on circumstances? Care to give some context?

(18,577 posts)The article's first paragraph:
My specific research on the CDC's site confirms the number 4,752. This is across the 19 and under age group. I'm not a fan of describing "teens" as "children".
Currently, the CDC's (WISQARS ) Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System is not responding and indicates that data from 2021 is being integrated into the various pages, reports and databases.
I do remember that half or more of the deaths were among the older ages.

(14,559 posts)If every study and all data gathering is subject to someone's agenda why bother researching at all.
Oh, I forgot, that's the NRA and NSSF tactic to obfuscate any information they don't like.

(3,816 posts)Including 19 year olds as "children", when that particular class makes up a decent percentage of the group, seems "agenda-ish".

(10,136 posts)the manipulation is intentionally dishonest with the label of "children".
18 and 19 year olds are not children, they are adults. And in the case of this data set, these adult acts are almost all gang violence.
This data manipulation does not make the problems any less important. However, the manipulation makes it harder to separate the multiple the problems, which require separate solutions. This level of honesty does tend to undermine the agendas of many anti-gun organizations.

(18,577 posts)The number persons under 18 killed by a firearm is 2379. This is almost exactly half of the 4752 quoted in the article which I also verified via the CDC database. That larger number was for those 19 and under.
IMO characterizing 18 and 19 year olds as "children" is misleading. NBC links to their article a year ago using the same age range. At best I can maybe see an argument for minors being called children but at 18 you're an adult. While the headline may be true, I don't see a distinction anywhere among the 21 instances of the term where deaths of minors is giving.
The subtitle goes on to explain the data as being about "children" and teens. This further convinces me that my view of "children" as those 12 and under is basically shared by this author.
I infer the headline was written simply to generate clicks.
The figures are what they are, society's failure.
