NBC’s Brian Williams Recants Tale of Helicopter Attack

NBC News anchor Brian Williams acknowledged that a story he had been telling for years about being on a helicopter in Iraq in 2003 that was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade was false.

“I made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago,” Mr. Williams said while addressing the matter on his Wednesday evening broadcast.

Mr. Williams first made his retraction to Stars and Stripes, a military newspaper, days after again telling the tale on NBC News. It was after this latest event that members of the helicopter crew told Stars and Stripes that Mr. Williams wasn’t among the passengers. The helicopter Mr. Williams and other NBC News staffers were on was trailing the hit copter, and wasn’t fired on.

“I would not have chosen to make this mistake,” Mr. Williams told Stars and Stripes, adding, “I don’t know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another.”
