MSNBC surges as home for Trump opponents

By DAVID BAUDER

NEW YORK (AP) — For the first month since CNN’s Larry King owned cable news in October 2001, the most popular personality in prime-time doesn’t work for Fox News Channel. Rachel Maddow of MSNBC is the new champ.

Her network achieved other milestones in July, including its closest finish to Fox since 2000 and largest margin of victory over CNN ever. The numbers illustrate a surge in popularity at MSNBC, where politics has become prime-time entertainment. Like late-night comic Stephen Colbert can attest, having President Donald Trump as a regular punching bag is great for business.

“I thought there would be a lot of interest in news,” said MSNBC President Phil Griffin. “I had no idea this would happen.”

It’s especially noteworthy because the year after an election traditionally signals a slump in cable news ratings. During prime-time weekday hours in July, Fox News averaged 2.36 million viewers — still more than any other cable network, news or entertainment. MSNBC was at 2.13 million and CNN at 961,000, according to the Nielsen company.

A wider view illustrates how things have changed. ...

No one ever told them oil & water don't mix. They were not too bright trying that, they could have ended up with neither.

supportive all along of the news team he put together. When Lack came back to head up NBC News is when he slowly started to turn things.

Even Lawrence during the rough days had high praise for Griffin.

No?

For years they scrambled to be Fox lite. Hired on wingnuts as commentators for 'balance'. Always clung to the false equivalency strategy of making sure they, at the very least, did not embarrass any right winger / Republican guest with too many facts, and made sure to never do any pre-interview research to challenge them so as to make sure they came on back. Made sure they allowed any RW guest to blab on and on over-talking all the other guests and host with endless obfuscation. Then throw up their hands at the end and declare "who knows who is telling the truth?"...you decide.

Now they are not really trusted much by either side. Although they do have a couple of great journalists only now showing their feathers.

...I'm am so tired of them trying to NORMALIZE Humpty Dumpty. He's not normal and I want the networs I watch to say so. Chris Cuomo (on at 3am in the morning here on west coast) is only one of a handful of CNN anchors that calls out Humpty Dumpty/his admin on their shitty job they are doing.

Those of us on our side often view them as rightwing. The Rumpublicans attack them, and call them leftist news.

The simple and sad truth about CNN is that they really are neither. They are all about the clicks, viewers, and ratings. They are borderline tabloid worthy.

Whatever gets the most clicks, most viewers, most attention.. that's what they'll put out there.

She couldn't be on tv the way she looks. I can't remember how she said it. But, basically she was stating that the American public wouldn't turn in to seeing a woman who doesn't look like a model and looks somewhat androgynous.

Now look where she is at! Yeah they do have her wearing makeup and contact lenses and a blazer. But, still.
