Leaked Document Shows NYT Censorship of Words Like “Genocide” in Gaza Coverage

The Times discourages references to “Palestine,” in a refusal to acknowledge the state Israel has been occupying.

The New York Times has a policy of systematically censoring words like “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” in its coverage of Israel’s genocidal assault of Gaza, according to an internal memo obtained by The Intercept this week.

The Times memo instructs its journalists to avoid using the terms “genocide,” “ethnic cleansing” and “refugee camps” when writing about Palestine. It directs them to steer clear of referring to areas of Palestine as “occupied territory” — and, even further, discourages referring to Palestine as “Palestine” whatsoever. In addition, the memo claims that words like “slaughter,” “massacre” and “carnage” are often too emotional to describe Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.

The memo was written by Times standards editor Susan Wessling and international editor Philip Pan and their employees, and says its aim is to “offe[r] guidance” on terms the paper has “grappled with” since October, when Israel’s current siege of Gaza commenced.

And to repeat for the millionth time, if it were genocide there would be no Gazans alive. Israel has that capability.
And, by the way, I totally disapprove of the Israeli government's actions.

Also, genocide wasn't the only term the NYT is accused of forbidding in its coverage of Gaza. Many of the rest are seriously ridiculous.

The US has a long track record of not recognising genocide, Rwanda being a good example. Once they acknowledge a genocide is happening, they're at least morally obligated to take action as the US is a signatory to the Genocide Convention. And that doesn't suit the US in most cases.

Also, if you've repeated that a million times, why hasn't anyone told you yr wrong? Was every last Armenian, European Jew, Cambodian, or Tutsi murdered?

Here's the meaning of genocide from the Holocaust Museum. I've bolded the bit you need to take notice of.

Genocide is an internationally recognized crime where acts are committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

I'm going to do a search and see if those words are avoided, and if that's the case I'll cancel my subscription and replace it with the Guardian, which also happens to have a very good Australian edition. Win win
