Sex allegations at Carlsbad academy

CARLSBAD — A former top administrator at the century-old Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sexually molesting at least six former students who he had mentored, police said.

Jeffrey S. Barton was taken into custody by Carlsbad police shortly after 5 p.m., police Lt. Marc Reno said. Barton was booked into the Vista jail on 16 felony counts, 14 of them oral copulation with a minor by force, and two counts of sodomy with a minor by force, according to the jail website.

Reno said bail would be set at $2.1 million, although jail records indicate that bail was set at $6 million. Barton is scheduled to appear in Vista Superior Court early next week.

Barton, 55, resigned in June after working 18 years at the private college-preparatory academy, the only military boarding school in California.
