An internal Veterans Affairs Department report states that about one-third of the veterans waiting to receive medical care from the agency have already died.
A review of veteran death records provided to the Huffington Post found that, as of April, 847,822 veterans were awaiting healthcare and that of those, 238,647 were already deceased.
The report was handed over by Scott Davis, a program specialist at the VA's Health Eligibility Center in Atlanta
He also sent copies to the House and Senate VA panels and to the White House.
A VA spokeswoman told Huffington Post that the department cant subtract dead applicants from the list and that some may never have completed an application but remain on the back log.
Spokeswoman Walinda West also said that more than 80 percent veterans who come to the department "have either Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare or some other private insurance.
Consequently, some in pending status may have decided to use other options instead of completing their eligibility application."
Davis dismissed that argument.
"VA wants you to believe, by virtue of people being able to get health care elsewhere, it's not a big deal. But VA is turning away tens of thousands of veterans eligible for health care," he said. "VA is making it cumbersome, and then saying, 'See? They didn't want it anyway.'"

(1,090 posts)You have to wonder WTF is going on, are the people in charge doing this on purpose? Are they directed to make it as hard as possible? Or do just ass hats climb to the top of the ladder in these agencies? when I was driving a van for DAV to the VA hospital in Salt Lake City, I must say there was a couple of times I wanted to reach over a counter and slap the piss out of some asshole giving a vet a hard time and being nasty about it. You can be civil to people even if you can't help them. I've also heard they are not allowed to help vets with paper work, but i'm not sure how true this is.

(1,027 posts)The place was a mess and it looked to me that I would have to go back many times to receive my final verdict. Because I retired I decided to forgo the VA and just use TriCare Prime for my medical, so I am probably one of the people on that list.

(173 posts)After 47 years, I decided to apply for disability based on hearing loss and PTSD. I went to my local vet center, and came out with a handful of papers and a bad feeling. A friend pointed me in the direction of the VFW, where I got a friendly greeting. They helped me with the paperwork, and it was submitted in April. I honestly thought that was the end of it, until I got a letter saying I had been scheduled for a hearing test and a psych evaluation. I was given transportation to the VA hospital last week, looked at by very nice doctors, and told I would get the result in a few weeks. I had heard there was a one year plus wait time. Not true. The young vets I traveled with were also surprised that things happened so fast. Whatever the result, for me, the VA here in Hawaii seems to be making a good effort.
