Jim Wachtler had tears in his eyes.

“I cry every time I come here,” said Wachtler, who flew in from San Diego to see his late father honored Sunday at the site of a South Omaha veterans memorial that bears his name.

Wachtler’s dad, Elmer Wachtler, was killed in action Jan. 5, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He was 26. Jim had just turned 2.

“I never really knew my father,” Wachtler said. “It’s nice to see him recognized.”
