Concerns about care

TEMPLE — At least three family members of residents at the William R. Courtney State Veterans Home say the quality of care for the veterans and former military spouses who live at the nursing home has declined in recent years. State officials, though, adamantly deny that’s the case.

In 2013, Killeen resident Ernest Montgomery, a Vietnam War veteran, took his wife to the home in Temple after bad experiences in other nursing homes.

“I walked through; I liked it,” Montgomery, 66, said. “It was clean. The (certified nurses aides) had a good attitude; they weren’t complaining.”

In the two years since, however, Montgomery said he’s noticed a drop in the level of care, cold food, fewer checks on his wife and, perhaps most disturbing, at least a two-week gap in which the home failed to give his wife her medicine for multiple sclerosis.
