Green Ramp Disaster, Ft. Bragg

The Green Ramp disaster was a 1994 mid-air collision and subsequent ground collision at Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina. It killed twenty-four members of the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division preparing for an airborne operation. It was the worst peacetime loss of life suffered by the division since the end of World War II.

Soldiers who died as a result of an airplane crash at Pope Air Force Base on March 23, 1994:

Three aircraft were destroyed and over 100 soldiers were wounded. Mostly by the massive fireball and exploding ammo.

nearly ever time we left Green Ramp in my 25 years in Airborne units out of Bragg.

Even in peace time it’s a dangerous job.

The 504th is called devils in baggy pants because this note was found in a dead German Army officer journal.

“American paratroopers – devils in baggy pants – are less than 100 meters from my outpost line. I can’t sleep at night; they pop up from nowhere and we never know when or how they will strike next. Seems like the black-hearted devils are everywhere…”
