Sully, a service dog who gained fame for his loyal companionship to President George H.W. Bush, has received a new assignment at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The yellow Labrador retriever joined a team of facility dogs at the hospital and will provide comfort to veterans and their families, according to a personalized oath of enlistment read during a Wednesday livestream.
The oath began: "Sully H.W. Bush, do you affirm or pant as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy that you will support, comfort and cheer our warriors and their families, active duty and retired?"
During the oath, Sully was asked to provide "unconditional love and solace, especially on busy days," and acknowledge that the responsibility came "without any promise of treats or tummy rubs."
The dog was asked to "shake" at the conclusion of the oath.
