Our first day after leaving reception the drill sergeants explained to us that "today's" Army was a "kinder, gentler Army", and then spent all day making us hate life...

Just as the truck pulled to stop, the drill sergeant who rode over with us and briefed us on our new unit said ominously: "We're home, fellas..."

Just then, the doors of the cattle car opened, bright sunlight spilled in, and......

You remember that scene at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan when the landing craft's ramp went down?

It was a little like that, only with fewer bullets and more screaming drill sergeants.

It took a few minutes of blinking, surprised confusion before I started wishing I hadn't enlisted...
