Related: About this forumI was given a jacket today the vets and the widow called a "honor jacket" .
And I personally don't think I deserve it
The man in question it represents sounds like he was a Super Man. I'm just some homeless gal just trying to survive.
The gentleman's widow said from what she has been told about me that he would want me to have it. But I don't know, he sounds like a real hero, something I'm not.
I don't know if I should have turned it down. They seem so happy for me to have it. I've been setting here looking at it and I don't know what to think about it. Don't know if I should try give it back, hang it up on my wall when I get my place, what.
That's why I'm turning to you guys. What do I do with this memory of what sounds like a true hero. I really don't feel worthy .

(12,344 posts)The point is not what you think about yourself, the point is what they think of you. You don't have to believe it, but it would be disrespectful to turn down the honor they think you deserve.

(14,120 posts)I didn't want to hurt their feelings, their small group of homeless Marines. Don't know how they managed it. The widow also seemed so happy.
I'm just going to hang it in a prominent place.

(2,204 posts)If they did, that's what I'd do. To honor the sacrifices the wife and her husband made. And pass on his story (what you know of it) when people see you wearing it.

(14,120 posts)Apparently everyone wanted to be in his squad back in Vietnam. He always brought his men back. Even got shot a couple of times doing it.

(4,981 posts)I think their wisdom has to be respected and the gift accepted. MTC. Maybe they see something that you do not.

(1,181 posts)And when people ask about the jacket, tell them about the previous owner and the people who gave you the jacket.
Use the jacket to tell their story and to honor them
