Veterans
Related: About this forumMost veterans do not know that they may be entitled to a pension from the VA.
It is complicated and depends on income and dependents. Veterans should check with their county VA office. You do not have to be disabled.

(68,357 posts)I served four years active, including service in the Gulf in 1991. I don't see how that entitles me to a pension.

(10,467 posts)I'm pretty sure I don't rate any kind of military pension.

(19,720 posts)How long or where they served need to know their benefits. Why is this not a top priority? I am not military. I am, however, very appreciative and there needs to be information available..maybe even required when discharged. My dad was a Marine in the Pacific in WWII..n then he joined the Air Force during Vietnam Nam and flew supplies .. he was able to open an air conditioning n heating school thanks to his benefits. So.. lets give em what they deserve.

(23,763 posts)Not many qualify for this. It takes 90 days of service, with one day in a conflict zone, but there's a means test. It's far more miserly than the means test for VA health benefits.
There's also a survivor pension, described on that same web site.
Local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts may be able to steer you in the right direction to apply for these.

(3,334 posts)If you were serving before September 8, 1980, you needed 90 days of active service. If you started to serve September 8, 1980, or after you had to serve 24 months of active duty. Veterans on SSI qualify and as long as their assets equal less than $130,774. Assets do not include your house and car. Maximum Annual Pension Rate for a veteran with 1 dependent is $27,549 minus your income. It is difficult to know if you are eligible, but it is worth looking into.
