Ageism and COVID-19

Last edited Thu May 7, 2020, 02:57 PM - Edit history (1)

I was watching Rachel Maddow tonight on her show, and she was sincerely dumbfounded why the Iowa Governor is proud of her COVID-19 case numbers. I had a theory.

My understanding is that a very high percentage of COVID-19 deaths happen to people over age 60, especially if one has heart disease, diabetes, lung conditions, or any immunosuppressive condition. The death rate in nursing homes is very high. I am using this site for information: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/

Does anyone think the Republican governors (like Iowa and South Dakota, Ohio governor seems ok) would be so lackadaisical about the COVID-19 death rates if they were mostly occurring to children, especially young children ? Call me cynical but I don't think so. I think the Republican governors would be moving heaven and earth to minimize and eventually eliminate the COVID-19 deaths.

Proposed "moral of the story": if you're over 60, the Republicans don't give a flying f*** about you, especially if you're in a nursing home. How ironic, in that many seniors vote Republican. Maybe this will be a revolutionary revelation to seniors, that DEMOCRATS actually care more about your welfare.

We should open because it "only" impacts elderly or people with pre-existing conditions. HUH! Are their lives less worthy?
